Welcome
Welcome.
After some trial and error I have decided how to manage my collections. I will add a new collection each time I upload a set of photos. After @2 months the photo's in that dated collection will be transfered into the eight main collections (steam, diesel/electric, multiple units, 1970/80's modern image, preserved modern image, misc rolling stock, infrastructure and Overseas Railways). New collections will be what I take now or from my 3800+ 35mm transparencies from the 1970's and early 1980's. I have also started to caption my photographs. Any comments or additional information will be gratefully received, feedback and messages always welcome.

Thanks for visiting my site, regards John

31156 heads towards Doncaster at Stainforth with a short train of bogie bolster wagons early in the morning of the 15th April 1977. 31156 had been built as D5574 at Loughborough and entered traffic in December 1959 allocated to Norwich. By the early 1970’s it had transferred to Immingham where it would spend most of its subsequent carear with short spells at Thornaby and Healey Mills. It received a classified repair at Doncaster in February 1985, however by mid 1991 it was stored unserviceable and was withdrawn in August 1991. It would survive another four years before being broken up by MC Metals, Glasgow in September 1995.

31195_1977_04_Stainforth.jpg   31195 heads east with a train of unfitted 16 ton mineral wagons loaded with coal, 15th April 1977. Built at the Brush Falcon works, Loughborough in 1960 as D5619 it entered traffic in May 1960 allocated to Stratford. It was to have a relatively short career for a class 31/1 of just over twenty seven years (with the majority of the 1970/80’s allocated to Immingham) as it was withdrawn from Immingham in February 1988. Unlike a lot of class 31’s once withdrawn was quickly dispatched for scrap and was broken up by CF Booth at Rotherham in September 1988.  Stainforth – 15th April 1977  (13)

08877_1977_04_Sheffield.jpg   Sheffield station pilot on the 15th April 1977 is Tinsley allocated 08877. The class 08 is the standard British Railways shunting engine and from 1953 to 1962, nine hundred and ninety six locomotives were built, making it the most numerous of all British locomotive classes. There were also in the same period twenty six near identical (but higher-geared) class 09 locomotives built, and one hundred and seventy one similar (but fitted with different engines and electrical equipment) locomotives built which together brought the total number of outwardly-similar machines to one thousand one hundred and ninety three. The class 08 design was based on the London Midland and Scottish Railway 12033 series (later class 11) design introduced in 1945. 08877 was built at Darlington in1961 and was originally D4045, allocated to Sheffield Darnall MPD. When Darnall MPD closed on the 4th October 1965 its entire allocation of diesel shunters (including D4045) was transferred to Tinsley, however it quickly moved on, being transferred to Barrow Hill during 1966. By 1972 it was back at Tinsley where it would remain for the next twelve years or so until transferred to Frodingham around 1985. On the closure of Frodingham it transferred to Doncaster.08877 was officially stored on the 15th August 1999 at Doncaster and on the 27th August 1999, it left South Yorkshire and was taken by road to the CRDC at Wigan Springs Branch where it became the depot pilot. 08877 currently (July 2009) resides at Wigan Springs Branch and is still used occasionally.  Stainforth – 15th April 1977  (5)
20132_1975_10_Doncaster.jpg   Single class 20 locomotives were not that common even light engine and therefore 20132 heading south around the back of Doncaster station on the 18th October 1975 is quite noteworthy. 20132 was delivered from English Electric’s Vulcan Foundry works in 1966 as D8132 and was outshopped in green livery. The soundness of the design is shown by the high number of class 20’s still running in the mid 1970’s in there original green paint. As can be seen here 20132 is one of these class 20’s, which denotes that since delivery almost ten years before hand it has not received a classified works repair. 20132 would survive a period in store in 1983 and would continue in traffic into the mid 1990’s Following withdrawal it was sold to Harry Needle in 1999 and was initially stored at Bescot until moved to MOD Longtown in January 2001. In January 2005 it was transported by road to Barrow Hill were it has been repaired and returned to operation and is where it can be currently (December 2008) found.  This Day in History – Sheffield Area – 20th May 1973  (3)
24046_1976_02_Nuneaton.jpg   By February 1976 class 24’s were becoming rare as withdrawals took there toll, so I was quite surprised to find three class 24’s stabled together in the mist and drizzle at Nuneaton, 7th February 1976. My records state that they are 24046, 24142 and 24136 in that order, however 24136 is clearly an error as it was withdrawn in October 1975 still in green livery. I suspect that “24136” is either 24133 or 24134 or 24137. Originally D5046, 24046 was one of a batch of locomotives built at Crewe works for delivery to depots in East Anglia. The frames were laid down at Crewe works during the summer of 1959, and it entered service in October 1959, allocated to Ipswich MPD. By 1968 it had migrated to its final home of Stoke Division (in reality Crewe Diesel Depot) where it would remain until withdrawn five months after this photograph in July 1976. It was broken up a year later at Swindon works in July 1977.  Mist and drizzle – 7th February 1976.   (2)
20209_1979_06_Duffield.jpg   A pair of class 20’s with 20209 leading power a class 9 unfitted train of empty coal wagons north through Duffield, 1st June 1979. 20209 was originally D8309, built in 1967 and first allocated to York MPD. By 1973 it had transferred to Tinsley where it would remain until the mid 1980’s when it transferred to Toton. Following a brief spell at Bescot it was withdrawn from Toton in February 1989. Following withdrawal it was sold to Hunslet-Barclay and was to become 20907. However it was not overhauled, instead becoming a source of spares for the six class 20’s that became 20901 to 20906. What was left was then “sold” to DRS who stripped it further with the remains being broken up by Michael Douglas Ltd, Carlisle in December 2001.  1970/80's Modern Image - Diesel Locomotives  (2)
20122_1978_08_Ayr.jpg   20122 leads 20206 and a train of loaded HAA coal hoppers into Falkland Yard, Ayr, 30th August 1978. 20122 was always a Scottish engine from being built as D8122 in 1962 until withdrawal in January 1991. Its initial allocation was to Polmadie MPD it then moved to Eastfield and in the mid 1980’s had a spell at Motherwell before moving back to Eastfield. Following withdrawal it was eventually broken up by MC Metals, Glasgow in October 1993. 20206 was built in as D8306 in 1967, withdrawn in April 1991 but not broken up until March 2004 by CF Booth, Rotherham after years of being slowly stripped for spares.  1970/80's Modern Image - Diesel Locomotives  (1)
20130_1977_04_Tinsley.jpg   20130 heads a line of class 20’s stabled on a Saturday afternoon in the shed yard at Tinsley, 9th April 1977. After the failure of the class 17 Clayton type 1 locomotives BR decided to revert back to the tried, tested and reliable English Electric type 1, the class 20 and placed an order for another batch of one hundred locomotives. Delivery of this batch commenced in 1966, four years after the last locomotive of the previous batch. 20130 was originally D8130 and was the second locomotive of this later order. For most of its career it would be associated with Tinsley and it would survive a period in store in 1982/83.On being reinstated following classified repair and fitting of air brake equipment it would continue in traffic until October 1990 when it was condemned from Toton. It would be broken up within the year by MC Metals, Glasgow in September 1991.   1970/80's Modern Image - Diesel Locomotives  (1)

11 1178_1979_04_Wansford1.jpg   Swedish Railways S class 2-6-2T 1178 awaits departure from Wansford, 21st April 1979. Built in 1914 by Motala Verkstad, Sweden it was withdrawn in 1959 and instead of being broken up it was put into the Swedish strategic reserve. It arrived in the UK for preservation in 1975 and in June 1977 it worked the Nene Valley Railway's opening train. Being an ideal size for the line, economical, and easy to operate, 1178 was used frequently, however by 1985 it was stopped with leaking boiler tubes. Due to a motive power crisis, it was returned to traffic in 1989, after a very light overhaul. By 1992 the engine was in poor condition and was withdrawn. It has not run since.  Nene Valley Railway – 21st April 1979.   (1)
12 D9504_0905_Wansford.jpg   D9504 stands in the yard at Wansford with 22nd May 2009. One of a class of fifty six Type 1 0-6-0 diesel hydraulic (subsequently class 14) locomotives it was built at Swindon Works in 1964 for shunting and short trip freight duties. The locomotive is powered by a six cylinder Paxman Ventura 6YJXL engine producing 650bhp, connected to a Voith L217U hydraulic transmission and Hunslet gearbox. The axles were connected by coupling rods and driven by a jackshaft located under the cab, clearly visable between the second and third axles. Initially allocated to Landore MPD in South Wales it was one of thirty three that transferred in January 1967 to Hull (Dairycoates) for North Eastern Region duties and was withdrawn from there in April 1968. I first saw this engine shortly after withdrawal when all thirty three Hull class 14 engines were dumped on the shed (many round the turntable in the roundhouse) waiting sale or disposal. D9504 was sold to the National Coal Board for use on its extensive rail system at Lampton colliery in the North East. It was numbered 506 in the NCB fleet. It later transferred to the Ashington colliery system. On closure of the colliery it was sold for preservation although it has also been used on engineers trains on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link during its construction and as yard shunter at Bardon Hill quarry.  Nene Valley Railway – 22nd May 2009   (1)
13 42968_0905_Bridgenorth.jpg   London Midland and Scottish Railway Stanier Mogul 2-6-0, 42968 sits in the sunshine in Bridgenorth yard, 30th May 2009. Built at Crewe works in 1933 this class of forty locomotives were designed at Horwich works and were developed from the LMS Hughes “Crab” 2-6-0. They had the addition of several features brought over from the Great Western Railway by newly-arrived Chief Mechanical Engineer William Stanier, most notably the taper boiler. Due to a higher boiler pressure than the “Crabs” the cylinders could be 3" smaller in diameter and so the cylinders were able to be mounted horizontally. Like the “Crabs” they were connected to a Fowler tender that was narrower than the locomotive. The class were initially numbered 13245-84 but in the LMS 1933 renumbering scheme they were renumbered 2945-84 in 1934. British Railways added 40000 to their numbers so they became 42945-84. 42968 entered traffic on the 24th January 1934 and gave over thirty two years service before becoming the penultimate member of the class to be withdrawn when it was condemned on the 31st December 1966.After spending seven years awaiting breaking up at Barry it was purchased for preservation and moved to the Severn Valley Railway in December 1973. Returned to steam in November 1990 it is currently (May 2009) undergoing boiler repairs prior to re-entering traffic.  Severn Valley Railway Day Out – 30th May 2009 (Part 3)  (1)
14 5164_0905_Bridgenorth.jpg   Great Western Railway “Large Prairie” 2-6-2T 5164 sits in the shed yard at Bridgnorth, 30th May 2009. Although built at Swindon in 1930 the design is a modified version of the 3100 class introduced in 1903. In all two hundred and ninety engines to this basic design were constructed although there were detailed differences within various batches. After thirty three years service 5164 was withdrawn in April 1964 and would spend the next ten years at Barry until purchased by the 51XX Fund and transported to the Severn Valley Railway in January 1973. Following overhaul it re-entered traffic in 1979. It completed its latest overhaul in May 2004.  Severn Valley Railway Day Out – 30th May 2009 (Part 4)  (1)
15 7714_0905_Highley.jpg   7714 arrives at Highley with the 2:05pm service from Kidderminster, 30th May 2009. 7714 was built for the Great Western Railway by Kerr Stuart in May 1930. Its first allocation was Tyseley MPD, however by nationalisation it had migrated to Birkenhead MPD where it would spend most of its British Railways career It survived in service until January 1959 when it was withdrawn from Croes Newydd MPD. Following withdrawal it was sold in July 1959 for further use to the National Coal Board and was sent to Penallta colliery in the Rhymney area of the South Wales Division.  Severn Valley Railway Day Out – 30th May 2009 (Part 5)  (1)
16 81001_1976_02_Rugby.jpg   81001 light engine in the mist and drizzle at Rugby, 7th January 1976. The order for the first twenty five locomotives for the West Coast Main Line electrification was given to the British Thomson-Houston division of AEI (Associated Electrical Industries) in 1955, who subcontracted the mechanical construction to the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company, of Smethwick, Birmingham. The first of the class, and the first new AC electric to be delivered was E3001 in November 1959. These twenty five locomotives became class 81 and E3001 became 81001 under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme. Three class 81s were removed from service prior to the class being renumbered in 1974 due to accident or fire damage. The first renumbered class 81 taken out of service was 81016, withdrawn in July 1983 and the class were steadily withdrawn over the next eight years with 81001 being a relatively early casualty in July 1984. It was broken up at Crewe works in September 1986.  Mist and drizzle – 7th February 1976.   (1)
17 45407_0811_Huddersfield.jpg   LMS Stanier Class 5, 4-6-0, 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier storms through Huddersfield station with 1Z31, Manchester Victoria – Huddersfield – Blackburn – Manchester Victoria “Cotton Mill Express”, 22nd November 2008. Originally 5407 it was built by the Armstrong Whitworth Company, Spotswood, Newcastle in 1937 for the London Midland and Scottish Railway. It was one of a batch of two hundred and twenty six engines (which was the largest order ever placed with a private builder by a British Railway Company) worth £2.7 million. When new the engine was delivered to Kettering where it worked for a considerable time on the Midland mainline. In late 1960’s the engine was moved between various sheds ending up at Lockstock Hall in 1968. It was one of the final Black 5's withdrawn when it was condemned on the 4th August 1968. The engine was purchased from BR by David Davis for £3300 and was subsequently moved to Carnforth for restoration. In 1974 it was bought by Paddy Smith who operated the engine on the BR system. In 1989 45407 was moved to Carnforth for new tyres and onto the E.L.R. for running on Heritage Railways for the last three years of its boiler ticket. In 1997 Ian Riley bought the engine and had the engine overhauled at his works in Bury. Work included a new tender tank with greater water capacity, the fitting of air brake equipment to enable the engine to haul modern coaching stock and the fitting of TPWS. to comply with modern safety and signalling requirements.  Steam  (1)
18 25279_1979_03_Derby.jpg   25279 stands in platform 3 at Derby light engine waiting for the road, 24th March 1979. Originally D7629 it was built by Beyer-Peacock at Gorton Works, Gorton, Manchester. At this point in time Beyer-Peacock were facing liquidation, so BR agreed to provide them with an order for a batch of BR/Sulzer Type 2 (class 25) locomotives. The Beyer-Peacock batch started at D7624, and was originally for a total of 54 locomotives. However, Beyer Peacock subsequently entered liquidation and asked to be relieved of the D7660-7677 batch (that were subsequently built by BR Derby). D7629 was delivered to BR on September 5th 1965. It went to Wath MPD on the Eastern Region as one of a batch for working through freights to the Midland Region. The locomotive was later re-allocated to the Birmingham Division, and entered Derby Works for classified repair and dual braking on 4th June 1969. 25279 was one of the very last of it's class in service, withdrawn in March 1987. It was moved to Vic Berry's Scrapyard in Leicester before appearing on a BR Tender form in late 1987. It was purchased for preservation on the Llangollen railway. It moved to the Great Central in June 2000 and is currently (November 2008) based at Ruddington.  1970/80's Modern Image - Diesel Locomotives  (1)
19 M50123_1979_03_Derby.jpg   Tyseley DMU set TS552 enters Derby in a cloud of diesel fumes on a frosty 24th March 1979 morning. By this point in time hybrid DMU sets were becoming not uncommon and TS552 is an example as it is formed M50123+M59543+M50081. The two power cars are Derby/Leyland suburban class 116 vehicles, a Driving Motor Second (DMS) and Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) respectively while the centre car is a class 101 Metro-Cammell Trailer Composite Lavatory (TCL). The two power cars date from 1957 and were originally paired with Trailer Composite W59031 to form a three car high density suburban set for Birmingham local duties. M59543 started life as Sc59543 in 1959 and was part of a three car class 101 low density set with Sc 51445+Sc51515 for Edinburgh/Fife duties.  1970/80's Modern Image - Multiple Units  (1)
20 25057_1976_04_Birkenhead.jpg   25057 at Birkenhead MPD, April 1976. New as D5207 in June 1963 and allocated to Toton. Initially used to replace steam on the Midland Main Line it moved in December 1967 to the North West to finally eliminate steam in that area. Renumbered 25057 in early 1974 and later that year at Derby Works had its gangway doors welded up and was fitted with dual brakes. On its travels again when in May 1978 it was transfered to Laira for secondary passenger (still fitted with an operational boiler) and freight duties in the South West. Returned to the North West in November 1980. Continued in traffic until the last year of Class 25 operation being withdrawn in March 1987. Initialy sent to be broken up at Vic Berry, Leicester during 1988 but escaped into preservation. Currently operational (January 2008) on the North Norfork Railway.  1970/80's Modern Image - Diesel Locomotives  (1)

I seem to have had a strange day regarding “shed bashing” as I obviously failed to get round Birkenhead (which in my experience was usually easy to get round) and succeeded in getting round both Allerton and Longsight (which in my experience was usually difficult to get round).

Locomotives of note were Derby allocated class 03’s 2130, 2381 and 2388 which would all be withdrawn in the following three months (August, June and July respectively) and two (2130, 2388) would cease to exist within ten months being broken up by CF Booth, Rotherham in March 1973, 2381 survives today in preservation at Carnforth

    27th May 2009East Lancs Railway – 24th May 2009. (Part 2) (3 images)
The second part of day out with my wife to the East Lancs Railway 1940’s Wartime Weekend. In this collection we are on the move up the line from Bury through to Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall. As it was a “joint” trip the railway photography quite rightly took second place, but I did manage some, even if they are a bit “station bound” and these are the results.

    24th May 2009This Day in History – Toton – 24th May 1969. (9 images)
It’s a Saturday morning so its out with the push bike for a twenty mile round trip to Toton to see what was about.

    Class 08 (3056/59, 3174, 3362/63, 3400/04, 3996, 4145), class 20 (8013/47/59/62/69/91, 8136/39/40/43/44/47/49/54/55/58/70/73/78/81/83/87/88/92), class 25 (7524), class 37 (6814, 6939), class 44 (1/5/9/10), class 45 (21/33/39/45/47/56/62/64/91, 101/03/05/06), class 47 (1628, 1701, 1823/24/25/29).

Of note is the virtual lack of type 2 power, very strange and class 08’s, 3174 and 4145 which were not locals (3174 was I think at this time a Holyhead engine and 4145 was a Longsight engine) and I assume were on transfer to/from Derby works. In those days class 08’s were transferred between sheds and works usually via class 8 or 9 freight trains which abounded and who’s speed was slow enough not to be an issue.
A number of the above locomotives were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome
    24th May 2009Wakefield – 29th January 1976 (Part 2) (4 images)
The day starts out cold and misty but brightens up quite nicely as the day progresses and I was to be entertained by a constant flow of freight traffic over the three/four hours or so at Wakefield.

    23rd May 2009Nene Valley Railway – 22nd May 2009 (5 images)
These days I have to fairly regularly commute between Nottingham and Borehamwood (North London) and for a change I often come back via the A1 rather than the M1. Of course this route takes you past the Nene Valley Railway at Wansford which makes a convenient point for a break in the journey. However I was surprised on this Friday afternoon stop over to find the railway “in action” providing driver experience courses using the standard class 5, 73050.

    20th May 2009This Day in History – Sheffield Area – 20th May 1973 (18 images)
A tour of depots and stabling points around Sheffield and Rotherham thirty six years ago.

    Tinsley 41A: class 08 (3032/37/63, 3278, 3310/30/36, 3405/71, 3659, 3981, 4029/48), class 13 (4500/01/02), class 20 (8021/56, 8131/32/33, 8301/04/12/15), class 25 (5163/65/69/84, 5214/29), class 31 (5567/81, 5862), class 37 (6720/27, 6800/63), class 40 (233), class 45 (58/65, 127, 45101), class 46 (143/59/60), class 47 (1505/15, 1617/24, 1721/73/88, 1850, 1985/86/94)
    Rotherham Road: class 08 (3574)
    Wath 41C: class 08 (3061/64, 3329, 4032/33), class 25 (5172, 5228), class 31 (5573, 5829/38/40), class 37 (6834/62/64/69, 6959), class 76 (E26007/09/14/24/33/34/46/51, 76003/10/12/13/15/53)
    Barrow Hill 41E: class 03 (2045), class 08 (3209, 3337, 3401, 3664, 4036/38/39), class 20 (8057, 8129, 8303), class 25 (5162/73), class 31 (5598, 5845), class 37 (6833, 6926), class 47 (1794, 1984/95)

The above is an indication on how industry and railway operation in the Sheffield/Rotherham area has changed. On this Sunday in 1973 the coal mining, steel making and general industry in the Sheffield/Rotherham area was providing employment for at least one hundred freight locomotives and forty three shunting engines. Today on a Sunday you would do well to find any of either except for those at the heritage centre at Barrow Hill.

The presence of class 03, 2045 at Barrow Hill is a reminder that the “local” Railway Company had been providing the motive power for the then considerable Staveley Iron Works complex for over a hundred years. On the demise of steam around 1966 class 03’s took over these duties until extensive internal rail system was abandoned in the mid 1970’s and there use to be a small sub shed of Barrow Hill within the Iron Works complex. On a previous visit two years earlier on the 1st May 1971 this sub shed held 2129 and 2189.

Locomotives of note are class 08, 3037 which had been withdrawn six months previously and would soon become a snowplough ADB966510 and 45101 recently released from Derby works, carrying a new TOPS number and the first of fifty Peaks to be fitted with electric train heating equipment. Also of note is the partial renumbering with new TOPS numbers of the class 76 fleet.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome
    19th May 2009Wakefield – 29th January 1976 (Part 1) (4 images)
The day starts out cold and misty but brightens up quite nicely as the day progress and I was to be entertained by a constant flow of freight traffic over the three/four hours or so at Wakefield.
As always feedback and comments welcome.
    18th May 2009Bus Interlude - April/May 1979 (3 images)
There are a few non railway transport photographs within my collection and I did very occasionally photograph the odd bus or two as can be seen in this collection.
As always feedback and comments welcome.

    15th May 2009Nottingham Carriage Sidings – 25th January 1976 (3 images)
Following the closure of Colwick MPD in 1969 the local Nottingham area trip freight locomotives were stabled at the east end of the station either in the carriage sidings or across the line in London Road parcels depot sidings. This collection contains a number of photographs of locomotives stabled in the carriage sidings on a January day.

    14th May 2009Rule Britannia - Lenton South Junction – 9th May 2009. (5 images)
The last time I saw a Britannia at Lenton South Junction was in the summer of 1967 when 70026 Polar Star appeared totally unexpectedly on a parcels train from the Trent direction. Half an hour later it re-appeared, light engine, being turned on the Mansfield Junction – Lenton North Junction – Lenton South Junction triangle and headed back towards Trent. So when I realised that 1Z61 “The Palatine” special charter from London Victoria to Sheffield was both booked for a Britannia, was booked Midland Main Line but was not booked via Toton but was booked to use the Trowell branch then Lenton South Junction seemed to be the logical place to view its passage.

    13th May 2009North Eastern Interlude – 4th May 2009. (5 images)
A trip with my wife back to her family roots in Shildon, County Durham gave a brief opportunity for some railway photography.
    12th May 2009Nene Valley Railway – 21st April 1979. (4 images)
An interesting contrast to the recent collections from the Nene Valley Railway is this series of photographs from the same location but taken thirty years ago. In 1979 the Nene Valley Railway had a very Swedish feel.. As always feedback and comments welcome.

    9th May 2009This Day in History – 16A, 16C and 16F – 9th May 1971 (10 images)
On this day thirty eight years ago it was a lovely spring day and I was out on my push bike for a tour of some “local” establishments. This is what I saw on my fifty mile plus cycle ride:
    Toton 16A
    Class 08 (3039/44/56/58, 3249, 3345, 3400), class 20 (8009/13/15/35/36/81/72/99, 8111/15/34/35/55/60/70/73/80/85/86), class 25 (5230, 7521/58/60, 7617), class 45 (11/46/55/57/63/65/77/83/89, 115/26), class 47 (1713,1801/05/15),
    Derby 16C
    Class 03 (2386/88), class 08 (3180/86, 3789), class 25 (5250), class 45 (36, 110/18), class 46 (140), class 47 (1989).
    Burton Wagon Works
    Class 08 (3050)
    Burton 16F
    Class 08 (3025/59/82, 3790), class 20 (8003/12/62/67/77/88/98, 8137/41/42/45/51/57/61/63/65/74/81/82/89/94/98), class 25 (7509/59, 7604), class 47 (1825)

Of note is that despite seeing forty six locomotives at Toton I failed to get all the way round the shed, which explains the lack of any class 44’s. Also you can see the decline of Burton on Trent as a railway centre, in 1971 the collieries, yards and sidings in the Burton - Coalville area could support at least six Burton allocated class 08 pilots and also eleven pairs of class 20’s plus a class 47 (outstationed from Toton) for South Leicestershire coalfield colliery trip workings

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

    Technical Data
    Cameras
The photographs on this site were taken with the following cameras
1973 – 20th December 1975: A cheap non SLR Haminex “point and shoot” camera with poor depth of field and poor focus around the edges of the frame.
    21st December 1975 – 5th May 1979: Praktica SLR with 50mm lens and 200mm telephoto. I added a 75-260mm zoom lens in November 1976.
5th May 1979 – 2003: Canon AT1 SLR with 50mm lens plus the 200mm telephoto and 75-260mm zoom lens although I occasionally still used the Praktica if I was at work.
2003 – April 2007: Olympus C150 non SLR “point and shoot” digital camera
April 2007 to date: Canon 400D digital SLR with a 18-55mm zoom and a 90-300mm Canon zoom
January 2008 to date; Kodak Easyshare M753 digital “point and shoot” which I keep in my pocket and tend to use when I am working trackside.

    Scanners
The overwhelming majority of non digital photographs on the site are from 35mm transparencies originals and have been scanned using an Epsom 4490 scanner. A few are from prints and prior to obtaining the Epsom in December 2007 were scanned using a HP PSC 2335 scanner.
