John's Railway Gallery
Welcome
Welcome.

All photographs on this site have been taken by myself, with the earliest taken in 1974. The main time frame covered is 1974 – 1982 and 2007 to the present day although there are a few outside these dates. The source material is generally from my collection of 4000+ 35mm transparencies from the 1970's and early 1980's or digital images generated from various digital camera’s, these generally commence from around 2006 onwards. There are a few were the source material is either a black and white or colour print.

New collections are added frequently and will appear for approximately 2 months. At that point in time the photographs in that collection will be transferred into one of the fifteen or so main collections (steam, diesel/electric, multiple units, 1970/80's modern image, miscellaneous rolling stock, infrastructure etc) which can be found at the foot of the page.

New collections fall into three categories:
i) digital photographs taken within the last few days,
ii) scanned photographs taken in the past,
iii) historical themes (traction logs, anniversaries etc) illustrated with photographs of the locomotives etc mentioned taken later in their careers.

The vast majority of the photographs have detailed captions and any comments or additional information will be gratefully received. Also general feedback and messages always welcome.

Thanks for visiting my site
Regards John

In a sorry state is fire damaged 27006 seen here on the Eastfield MPD scrap line, 27th March 1976. The fire damage has proved to be fatal as 27006 had been withdrawn two months previous in January 1976. 27006 was originally D5352 and is one of sixty nine class 27 locomotives built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company (BRCW) during 1961 and 1962. D5352 entered traffic in September 1961 allocated to Eastfield MPD and would spend all its career in Scotland until its premature demise. It was eventually towed to Glasgow works and broken up in January 1977.

Through out the l960’s and the first half of the 1970’s Derby had an allocation of around six class 03’s. What they did is a mystery to me as despite my many frequent visits to Derby in this period I can not remember ever seeing one at work. By the end of 1976 the allocation was down to two, 03397 and 03399 and they can be seen here on the stops on one of the stabling roads at Derby Etches Park depot, 18th November 1976. 03397 was built at Doncaster works as D2397 and entered traffic in September 1961, allocated to Norwood Junction MPD. It quickly transferred to Weymouth in 1962 followed by a transfer to Bournemouth in 1967. By 1969 it had been fitted with dual brake equipment and waist high brake connections to allow coupling with Southern Region electric multiple units. 03399 was the last class 03 and was also built at Doncaster works, entering traffic in October 1961, allocated to Hither Green MPD before transferring to Ashford where it would remain for the majority of the 1960’s. It also had by 1969 acquired dual brake equipment and waist high brake connections. At the beginning of 1971 the Derby class 03 fleet consisted of 2130, 2381/83/86/87/88 and the first to be condemned was 2383 (April 1971) followed by 2381 (June 1972), 2388 (July 1972), 2130 (August 1972) and 2388 (December 1972). This was balanced by the transfer of 2397/99 to Derby so that by 1973 the fleet stabilised at three, 2386/97/99. This continued until March 1976 when 03386 was condemned, to be followed by the transfer in 1977 of 03397 and 03399 to Norwich and Colchester respectively. By July 1987 both were allocated to Norwich and both were condemned in that month with 03397 being broken up by Vic Berry, Leicester in January 1991. 03399 is still in existence having been sold for preservation and is currently (February 2010) located at the Mangapps Farm Railway Museum.

5197_0905_Bury.jpg   United States Army Transportation Corps, class S160 2-8-0 5197 is ready to depart from Bury Bolton Street station with the 13:00 service to Rawtenstall during the East Lancs Railway 1940’s Wartime Weekend, 24th May 2009. The S160 was designed in May 1942 by Major J.W. Marsh from the Railway Branch of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps would later become a part of the Transportation Corps (USATC). The S160 was an Austerity design with many features chosen for fast construction rather than long life, eg. axlebox grease lubricators were used, and rolled plates were preferred to castings. Around eight hundred were shipped to the United Kingdom during 1943/44 and around four hundred were utilised by the UK Railways prior to their transfer to Europe during 1944/45. 5197 however was not one of these locomotives and was delivered direct from the USA to China in 1945 and where it worked until the mid 1990s as Chinese State Railway's class KD6 No 463. It was rescued from being broken up by the Chinese and brought to the UK in 1995, being delivered to the Llangollen Railway for restoration, entering service in 1999. In 2001 it moved to the Churnet Valley Railway where it is normally based.  Steam  (2)
08909_1976_11_Derby.jpg   Minus its coupling rods and front buffers 08909 is in the works yard waiting to enter the erecting shop at Derby works for classified repair, 18th November 1976. 08909 was built at Horwich in 1962 as D4139 and initially allocated to Carnforth MPD where it was to stay until the depot closed in 1968. This was followed by spells at Bletchley, Willesden, Allerton and Stratford. In 2004 it was one of the pilots at Dee Marsh and then in 2007/08 was one of the Ketton cement works pilots until stored at Doncaster in April 2008. Following completion of an E exam at Doncaster Carr depot, it was reinstated back to traffic on the 16th July 2008 and can currently (February 2010) be found as the Doncaster Decoy Yard pilot.  Shunter Re-instatements (Part 1)  (2)
70013_0905_Lenton_Sth_Jcn.jpg   Britannia 70013 Oliver Cromwell has just taken the Main to Goods crossover at Lenton South Junction prior to taking the road to Lenton North Junction with 1Z61 “The Palatine” special charter from London Victoria to Sheffield, 9th May 2009. The train was advertised as the “The Palatine” but the engine is carrying “The Cathedrals Express” headboard for some unknown reason. The last time I saw a Britannia at Lenton South Junction was in the summer of 1966 when 70026 Polar Star appeared totally unexpectedly on a parcels train from the Trent direction. Half an hour later Polar Star re-appeared light engine, being turned on the Mansfield Junction – Lenton North Junction – Lenton South Junction triangle and headed back towards Trent. Oliver Cromwell was built at Crewe Works and completed in May 1951. It was the very last steam locomotive to be overhauled at Crewe works and became the very last Pacific in service. Regular British Railways steam ended on 3rd August 1968, but the final “end of steam” specials did not run until the 11th August 1968 when 70013 was one of a small number of steam locomotives to haul British Railways last steam train passenger train, the Fifteen Guinea Special between Liverpool Lime Street and Carlisle. Following withdrawal it was on display for thirty six years at the Bressingham Steam Museum until moved to Loughborough in 2004 for overhaul and was steamed for the first time in forty years in the spring of 2008.  Steam  (2)
25153_1979_07_Nottingham.jpg   25153 has just got the road to the carriage sidings from Nottingham station, 5th July 1979. 25153 was originally D7503 and was delivered from Derby works in October 1964 to the Nottingham Division (Toton). The high level decision to withdraw the Western Region diesel hydraulic fleet required their replacement by a variety of other locomotive classes and in August 1971 5179 arrived at Laira for crew training to enable class 25 locomotives to replace the NBL Class 22 locomotives. Over the next few months class 25 locomotives started to be transferred to Laira and in January 1972 a batch of eight (7502-7509) arrived from the London Midland Region. It would not remain at Laira long and by October 1972 it had transferred to Cardiff Canton and became a Bristol engine during 1974. As can be seen by the bodyside numbers 25153 received its last classified repair and repaint at Glasgow works (although this repair did not include dual brake equipment and it remained vacuum brake only) By the 1980’s 25153 was back on the London Midland Region and was withdrawn in April 1983. After storage at Cricklewood 25153 moved to Swindon works and was broken up in February 1987.  Nottingham station – 5th July 1979 (Part 2)  (1)
D2199_0909_Rowsley.jpg   Class 03 0-6-0 diesel mechanical shunter D2199 stands in the yard at Rowsley, Peak Rail, 7th September 2009. D2199 was built at Swindon works in 1961 and was built for light duties where a larger locomotive was not needed or was not allowed, especially for shunting at locomotive and carriage depots, docks and as station pilots. D2199 would be associated with dock duties being allocated through out its British Railways career to MPD’s adjacent to ports, initially Liverpool (Speake Junction MPD), transferring to Birkenhead MPD on its closure in 1966 and finally transferring to Barrow in Furness MPD. The steady reduction during the 1960’s in the demand for small shunting locomotives and the decline in traditional dock traffic meant that these duties progressively disappeared and class 03 withdrawals commenced from 1968 onwards. D2199 was withdrawn from Barrow in June 1972 prior to the 1973 TOPS re-numbering scheme, however it was eventually sold to the National Coal Board in 1974 following an overhaul and air brake fitment at Doncaster works. It then worked at Rockingham, North Gawber and Royston collieries until being placed into store at Monkton in 1984. It was sold in 1987 to the Heritage Shunter Trust and was on loan to Hanson Aggregates, Machen Quarry near Newport from 2003 until it arrived at Peak Rail in May 2006.  Preserved "Modern Image"  (1)
45108_1979_05_Market_Harborough.jpg   45108 heads north through Market Harborough with an express from London St Pancras, 12th May 1979. Although Market Harborough is today firmly on the Midland it was also the junction for the former London a North Western Railway, Northampton – Peterborough line which ran parallel at this point. The Market Harborough – Peterborough section was closed in the mid 1960’s and all that is left in this photograph is the siding on the far right, however the junction and line to Northampton survived (which can be seen behind the first three coaches) until the early 1980’s. An interesting anomaly is that by this point in time the area is controlled by the London and North Western Railway signal box (Market Harborough No. 3, seen in the background) with both the Midland Railway signal boxes (Market Harborough No.1 and Market Harborough No.2) having been abolished. 45108 was originally D120 and was built at Crewe in 1961. It would be associated with the Midland Main Line for virtually all of its twenty six years of service. 45108 became derailed at Cricklewood in July 1987 and following re-railing was sent to Stratford for evaluation of the damage. With the class being rapidly withdrawn repair of the relatively minor damage was not sanctioned and 45108 was withdrawn on the 4th August 1987. 45108 would survive withdrawal to be purchased for preservation and can currently (June 2009) be found at the Midland Railway Centre.  1970/80's Modern Image - Type 4 - 5 Diesel Locomotives  (1)
45212_0709_Goathland.jpg   London Midland and Scottish Railway, Stanier “Black Five” 45212 awaits departure from Goathland with a service to Pickering, 12th April 2009. Originally 5212 it was built by the Armstrong Whitworth Company, Spotswood, Newcastle in 1935. On the formation of British Railways in 1948 45212 was a Fleetwod engine where it would remain until almost the end of steam when it was transfered to Liverpool Speke MPD in 1965, Carlisle Kingmoor MPD in 1966 and finally Lostock Hall MPD from where it was withdrawn in August 1968 at the end of steam on BR.  On this day in History –Keighley and Worth Valley Railway – 7th February 1970  (1)

10 73050_0905_Wansford.jpg   73050 departs Wansford tender first with the 14:20 service to Peterborough, 3rd May 2009. On entering traffic in 1954 it was one of three Standard class 5’s allocated to Bath Green Park MPD (73050 – 73052) for Somerset and Dorset line duties from Bath to Bournemouth. For these duties these three engines were built with the larger BR1G tender (normally fitted to Standard class 9F locomotives) which held 5000 gallons of water and 7 tons of coal. Whilst these tenders held slightly more water than most of the other types of BR1 tender fitted to the Standard class 5 locomotives (BR1 – 4250 gallons, BR1B – 4725 gallons, BR1C – 4725 gallons, BR1H – 4250 gallons) they were not the largest, which was the BR1F tender paired to 73110 – 73119 which held 5625 gallons. If water was an issue on the Somerset and Dorset line one wonders why the BR1F was not used on these three engines.  Steam  (1)
11 20132_1975_10_Doncaster.jpg   Single class 20 locomotives were not that common even light engine and therefore 20132 heading south around the back of Doncaster station on the 18th October 1975 is quite noteworthy. 20132 was delivered from English Electric’s Vulcan Foundry works in 1966 as D8132 and was outshopped in green livery. The soundness of the design is shown by the high number of class 20’s still running in the mid 1970’s in there original green paint. As can be seen here 20132 is one of these class 20’s, which denotes that since delivery almost ten years before hand it has not received a classified works repair. 20132 would survive a period in store in 1983 and would continue in traffic into the mid 1990’s Following withdrawal it was sold to Harry Needle in 1999 and was initially stored at Bescot until moved to MOD Longtown in January 2001. In January 2005 it was transported by road to Barrow Hill were it has been repaired and returned to operation and is where it can be currently (December 2008) found.  1970/80's Modern Image - Type 1's  (1)
12 20170_1980_09_Lenton_Sth.jpg   20170 and 20143 haul a loaded class 9 unfitted coal train from one of the Leen Valley collieries round the curve from Lenton North Junction to join the “main line” at Lenton South Junction on its way to either one of the older Trent Valley power stations or Toton yard. The train is made up of a mixture of 21 ton and 24 ton coal hoppers and 16 ton and 21 ton mineral wagons. Although a couple of the 16 ton wagons could be vacuum fitted (bauxite painted) the majority of the train is running unfitted and therefore the only braking available to stop this train of at least thirty two wagons (at least 650 tons) would be that of the two locomotives and the 20 ton brake van that would be bringing up the rear. 20170 was originally D8170 and was built in 1966. It was allocated to Toton from new and was withdrawn in September 1991 still allocated to Toton. 20143 was originally D8143 and was also built in 1966. It was allocated to Toton from new, survived a period in store in 1986 and was finally withdrawn in January 1992 also still allocated to Toton. As far as I can tell neither of these two locomotives were ever transferred and spent there whole life at Toton. They were broken up by MC Metals, Glasgow in June 1993 and August 1993 respectively.  1970/80's Modern Image - Type 1's  (1)
13 41241_0710_Oxenhope_3.jpg   41241 storms into Oxenhope on a service from Keighley, 20th October 2007. At the end of the Second World War the London Midland and Scottish Railway were in desperate need of a modern small tank engine to replace numerous pre-grouping engines on branch line and secondary passenger duties. Chief Mechanical Engineer H G Ivatt developed a 2-6-2T design with incorporating modern labour safing devices such as self-emptying ashpans and rocking grates. Construction began in 1946 and ten were built by the London Midland and Scottish Railway before nationalisation in 1948, and were numbered 1200–9. A further one hundred and twenty were built by British Railways (41210–329) between 1948 and 1952. All but the last ten (built at Derby works) were built at Crewe works. 41241 was built by British Railways at Crewe and entered traffic in September 1949, allocated to Bath Green park MPD. It was withdrawn seventeen years later in December 1966. It was sold to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in 1967 and moved from Skipton, from where it had been withdrawn to Keighley under its own power. 41241 hauled the train at the reopening of the branch line in 1968 and has become synonymous with the KWVR ever since  On this day in History –Keighley and Worth Valley Railway – 7th February 1970  (1)
14 08667_1977_09_Bedford.jpg   Stabled in the yard at Bedford is 08667, 7th September 1977. Originally D3834 it was built at Crewe works and entered traffic in January 1960, allocated to Warrington Dallam MPD. In 1963 it moved south to Willesden and by 1973 was a Cricklewood engine. At the time of the photograph it was allocated to Bletchley. In September 1985 it received a classified repair at Swindon works and was fitted with dual brake equipment and was transferred to Neville Hill on release. However it was withdrawn in November 1992 and broken up by Gwent Demolition, Margam in March 1995.  Shunter Re-instatements (Part 1)  (1)

On this day thirty seven years ago it was out with the push bike for a twenty four mile round trip to Nottingham and Toton for a “bunk” round the shed. This is what was their that day.
    Nottingham: class 08 (3036, 3175, 3340/90, 3777), class 20 (8006/14/39/44, 8136/48/58/61/73/81/82/85), class 25 (5224/49, 7619), class 45 (12), class 46 (165), class 47 (1825/54).
    Toton: class 08 (3021/29/39/44, 3345/62/63, 3400/02, 3505, 3788/89, 3997), class 20 (8012/15/37/59/71/76, 8111/15/40/45/52/60/62/64/66/72/74/77/95/96/99), class 25 (5237/83, 7539/67, 7606), class 31 (5601, 5853), class 37 (6713, 6942), class 44 (1/3/4/5), class 45 (40/63/68/73/76/77/81/86/94, 102/03/05/14/22/30), class 47 (1631/97, 1710, 1808/10/24/32/34/39, 1960).
A total of twenty four locomotives stabled at Nottingham and seventy two locomotives present at Toton. Of note is the fact that the sidings around Nottingham could support at this time five class 08 pilots outstationed from Toton (two at the Central Materials depot, one at Wilford Road yard, one carriage pilot and one spare)

Fifty years ago Brush Type 2 deliveries were in full swing from the Falcon works at Loughborough. Following another dip into the reject pile of transparencies that failed the quality control thirty years ago, but avoided being consigned to the waste paper bin I have been experimenting with a batch of transparencies of class 31’s. This collection contains those that have been from a photographic point of view “reinstated to traffic from the scrap line”. As always feedback and comments welcome.

On the 1st January 1975 there were still sixty main line diesel hydraulics in service (fifty four Westerns – class 52 and six Hymek’s – class 35)

The last three class 02 shunters appear to be on borrowed time with 02001 out of use at Allerton depot, 02003 used occasionally to shunt DMU stock at Allerton and 02004 usually stabled at Liverpool Exchange with occasional use at Bank Hall.

Whilst working a Manchester – Euston express 83003 was de-railed south of Watford and was then in collision with 86209 working a Euston – Glasgow sleeper train. 86209 fell down the embankment.

1023 Western Fusilier suffered a broken axle at Oxford on the 29th January 1975, however despite the run down of the class escaped withdrawal.

Both 55001 (19th January 1975) and 55007 (12th January 1975) visited the Western Region Main Line for 100mph tests associated with dipped rail joints.

Derby Litchurch Lane works commenced production of Mark III coaches for the London Midland Region. There introduction into service will cascade Mark IIdef air conditioned coaches to the Midland Main Line during 1975

A weekend tour of the Glasgow and Edinburgh area moves on from Motherwell MPD to the main MPD for Glasgow, Eastfield for a walk round between the rain showers. Eastfield MPD was originally built by the North British Railway in 1904 as a 14 road straight shed. On closure to steam in November 1966 the shed was demolished and a purpose designed diesel depot constructed on the same site. In 1992, the diesel depot was closed and was demolished in 1995. 17th Jan 2010This Day in History – Southampton, 17th January 1974 (18 images)
A day trip from Nottingham to Southampton starts with 45103 to London St Pancras, a quick visit to Kings Cross, tube to Waterloo and EMU to Southampton and then return by the same path with 45109 from St Pancras. On the journey we saw the following:
    Class 07 (07002/03/06), class 08 (3273, 3304/06, 3400/61, 3514/87, 3773/76/85, 3864/66, 3909/36/96, 08030, 08845), class 09 (4100, 09021), class 20 (8037, 8148), class 25 (5217/82, 7562/72/95, 7612/20/66), class 31 (5590/92/99, 5602/05/08/15/22/25/42/45/47/50/51/54/93), class 33 (6500/24/28/72/89, 33006/18/21/26/29/34, 33114/18), class 37 (6803), class 40 (294), class 45 (31/45/55/84/98, 100/05/32/35/36, 45003, 45103/09/17), class 46 (144/50/91), class 47 (1514/43, 1684, 1708/10/52/59, 1812/35/43/61/70/84, 1974, 47485), class 55 (9001/10/17), class 73 (E6002/07/15/20/22/30/33/43), class 74 (E6106/10, 74001/05).
Items of interest are the high number of class 31’s (sixteen) at Kings Cross in the two brief visits, class 40, 294 seen at Nottingham and the high number of Eastleigh allocated engines carrying there new numbers compared to any where else.
    16th Jan 2010All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago –January 1960 (6 images)
Extracts from the RCTS Railway Observer from 50 years ago.

Diesel locomotive building was in full swing with British Railways workshops at Horwich building class 08’s, Doncaster building class 03’s, Derby building class 24’s, Crewe building class 08’s and class 24’s and Swindon building class 03’s and class 42’s (as well as the last of the class 9F 2-10-0 steam engines). Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry class 40’s and at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works class 20’s, British Thompson and Houston were building class 15’s and class 81 ac electric locomotives, Brush were building class 30’s (31’s) at Loughborough, North British Locomotive Co. were building a batch of 0-4-0 diesel hydraulic shunters, and class 22’s, the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. were building class 33’s, Andrew Barclay were building class 06’s and Hunslet class 05.

    New locomotives:
    Class 9F – 92218/19
    Unclassified – D2745
    Class 03 – D2079/80, D2128/29/30
    Class 05 – D2594/95

    Class 33 – D6500
    Class 40 – D253/55/56
    Class 42 – D815 Druid
    Class 81 – E3002

Notable withdrawals were the last of class of two small classes of Great Western Railway 0-4-0T’s 1106 and 1144 and the last C13, 4-4-2T 67417 and C14, 4-4-2T, 67450, both classes designed by JG Robinson of the Great Central Railway.

St Pancras – Bedford suburban services were dieselized on the 11th January 1960 using four car class 127 DMU’s.

Day time through services from Manchester to London Marylebone ceased on the 4th January 1960.

D5578 (Electric Blue) and D5579 (Golden Orch) were delivered in experimental liveries at the request of the Eastern Region due to the green livery blending into the countryside and coupled to the relatively quite operation of a diesel locomotive has resulted in several trackside fatalities.

The first class 33, D6500 was officially accepted into traffic although it had arrived at Hither Green MPD on the 17th December 1959.

D238 received a new bogie at Haymarket on the 19th January 1960 due to accident damage following collision with a steam locomotive in mid December 1959. Two steam breakdown cranes (from Motherwell and St Margaret’s) were used to lift the locomotive clear of the damaged bogie.

Crew training with York class 40’s commenced on the 21st January 1960 between York and Scarborough initially using D251/52.

Fifty years ago the first class 33, D6500 was officially accepted into traffic (although it had arrived at Hither Green MPD on the 17th December 1959) and it has given me an excuses for another dip into the reject pile. As my photographic skills improved so did the quality control on what was acceptable for the collection. Those transparencies that failed the quality control were generally consigned to the waste paper bin. However a few survived and with the technology now available a passable image can be made from some of these. I have been experimenting with a further batch of transparencies of class 33’s and this collection contains those that have been from a photographic point of view “reinstated to traffic from the scrap line”. As always feedback and comments welcome.
    9th Jan 2010Snow (9 images)
Every morning I look out of the window at all this snow and think of the photo opportunities I am missing as these days I must admit that the bloods thinning and I like the warmth of my home to much to go out battling the cold, but it didn’t stop me thirty years ago.
    9th Jan 2010Scottish Weekend Tour – 27th/28th March 1976 (Part 1) (4 images)
A weekend tour of the Glasgow and Edinburgh area starts at Motherwell MPD. Motherwell MPD in 1976 whilst now home to diesels still had the feel of a steam shed as it utilised the original Caledonian Railway eight road straight steam shed and as can be seen in the photographs the depot was mucky and grimy underfoot.

    2nd Jan 2010This Day in History - Day Trip to London – 2nd January 1971 (15 images)
In the mid 1960’s it was decided to concentrate all of the London Midland Region overnight sleeper services on Euston. This meant that the St Pancras – Nottingham – Leeds – Glasgow sleeper became the Euston - Nottingham – Leeds – Glasgow sleeper. The route taken between Euston and Nottingham was West Coast Main Line to Northampton, then the freight only line from Northampton to Market Harborough and then the Midland Main Line to Nottingham. This lasted until the early 1970’s when the sleeper service was cut back to start/terminate at Nottingham. A by-product of this was the ability in this period to use the seating accommodation of the Up service for a trip from Nottingham to London via the WCML, thus on the early morning of the 2nd January 1971 I board the train at Nottingham for the ride to Northampton behind D1686 where we change engines for E3126 for the run up to Euston. This is what I saw that morning on the run to Euston: class 08 (3024, 3228, 3776), class 25 (5218/47, 7531/32/36/57/58/99), class 37 (6720), class 40 (244), class 45 (16/45/96), class 46 (147), class 47 (1590, 1626/86, 1724, 1837, 1932), class 81 (E3012/15/16/22), class 82 (E3047/48/54), class 85 (E3063/64/66/77), class 86 (E3103/10/19/25/26/27/38/41/49/62/71/76/89/90). On arrival in London it was over to Waterloo for a hour with the following observed; class 09 (4104), class 42 (823), class 73 (E6025) and back to Kings Cross to see the following: class 31 (5593/95, 5606/26/42), class 47 (1503/17/19/20/35), class 55 (9008/10/16). The run back from St Pancras to Nottingham produced the following: class 08 (3022, 3304, 3575), class 25 (5215/25/32/50, 7550), class 45 (36/51/68/93/97, 102/27), class 47 (1634).

Of note is 823 at Waterloo which would not last the year as it was withdrawn in October 1971.

As can be seen by December 1973 the TOPS renumbering scheme was starting to be applied in earnest. The other thing to note is how dependant the Scottish Region was at that time on Type 2 power fitted with Sulzer engines.

    20th Dec 2009All Our Yesterdays - 20th December 1909 (9 images)
A hundred years ago today on the 20th December 1909 Herny Fowler succeeded Richard Deeley as the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Midland Railway (MR). He later became Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1925. Although he designed some excellant engines (ie LMS 4P, 2-6-4T's) he is remembered for as being responsible for the adoption by the LMS of the MR small engine policy. Under Fowler various MR types were built by the LMS, including the 4P Compound 4-4-0, the 2P 4-4-0, the 4F 0-6-0, and the 3F 0-6-0T. The small engine policy resulted in frequent double-heading, as the locomotives were not powerful enough to cope with loads, and thus increased expense. These standard locomotives were also built with short-travel valves and small axle boxes as he failed to balance the advances in technology with standardisation, the former leading to inefficiency and the latter to frequent hot axle boxes. Sir Henry Fowler retired in 1933, William Stanier was head-hunted into the job from the Great Western Railway and it was he who transformed LMS locomotive policy.

Nottingham City Transport (NCT) is one of the largest remaining municipal bus companies and is regarded as one of the best operators in the UK. In the early 1960’s City of Nottingham Transport as it was then developed a very strong corporate identity with an attractive “two tone” green livery and its own distinct standard double deck bus body specification for rear engined, front loading buses. 8th Dec 2009Westhouses – 3rd June 1979 (5 images)
Westhouses Motive Power Depot was opened by the Midland Railway in 1890. Situated in the heart of the north Nottinghamshire coalfield it was situated on the Midland Railway Erewash Valley line between Toton and Clay Cross not far from the present Alferton Parkway station. The depot comprised of a six road shed, 50ft turntable, water tower and coaling stage. In 1948 it had an allocation of fifty three freight engines (MR/LMS 2F/3F/4F 0-6-0’s and LMS 8F 2-8-0’s) for local colliery trip workings and main line coal duties. This had dropped to thirty three by 1959 (MR/LMS 3F/4F 0-6-0’s, LMS 8F 2-8-0’s and BR Stnd 9F 2-10-0’s). The depot closed to steam in 1966 and became a sub shed of Toton with the steam traction replaced predominantly with class 20’s with a couple of class 47’s and the odd Peak. It was still in use as a sub shed of Toton in June 1979 although by this point the six road shed had lost its roof with just a small section over the fuel point provided with a crude corrugated iron sheet replacement. Traction present at this period in time was still generally class 20’s but with the class 47’s now generally being class 56’s. The site finally closed in 1983 with the locomotive fuelling and servicing being transferred to Toton and the train crew signing on point and reduced locomotive stabling moved to the nearby Tibshelf sidings. With the demise of the local collieries even this arrangement quickly disappeared.

    Technical Data
    Cameras
The photographs on this site were taken with the following cameras
1973 – 20th December 1975: A cheap non SLR Haminex “point and shoot” camera with poor depth of field and poor focus around the edges of the frame.
    21st December 1975 – 5th May 1979: Praktica SLR with 50mm lens and 200mm telephoto. I added a 75-260mm zoom lens in November 1976.
5th May 1979 – 2003: Canon AT1 SLR with 50mm lens plus the 200mm telephoto and 75-260mm zoom lens although I occasionally still used the Praktica if I was at work.
2003 – April 2007: Olympus C150 non SLR “point and shoot” digital camera
April 2007 to date: Canon 400D digital SLR with a 18-55mm zoom and a 90-300mm Canon zoom
January 2008 to date; Kodak Easyshare M753 digital “point and shoot” which I keep in my pocket and tend to use when I am working trackside.

    Scanners
The overwhelming majority of non digital photographs on the site are from 35mm transparencies originals and have been scanned using an Epsom 4490 scanner. A few are from prints and prior to obtaining the Epsom in December 2007 were scanned using a HP PSC 2335 scanner.
