About Me
Born and bred in Nottingham and a frequent visitor to Toton depot from 1966 (aged 10) I now actually live in Toton and for the last thirty six years I have been involved in Railway Infrastructure works (signalling).

Here a I am thirty odd years ago at Grantham in February 1979, in the days when the blood was thicker and the cold did'nt bother me as much.

Welcome
Welcome.

All photographs on this site have been taken by myself, with the earliest taken in 1974. The main time frame covered is 1974 – 1982 and 2007 to the present day although there are a few outside these dates. The source material is generally from my collection of 4000+ 35mm transparencies from the 1970's and early 1980's or digital images generated from various digital camera’s, these generally commence from around 2006 onwards. There are a few were the source material is either a black and white or colour print.

New collections are added frequently and will appear for approximately 2 months. At that point in time the photographs in that collection will be transferred into one of the fifteen or so main collections (steam, diesel/electric, multiple units, 1970/80's modern image, miscellaneous rolling stock, infrastructure etc) which can be found at the foot of the page.

New collections fall into three categories:
i) digital photographs taken within the last few days,
ii) scanned photographs taken in the past,
iii) historical themes (traction logs, anniversaries etc) illustrated with photographs of the locomotives etc mentioned taken later in their careers.

The vast majority of the photographs have detailed captions and any comments or additional information will be gratefully received. Also general feedback and messages always welcome.

Thanks for visiting my site
Regards John

Oxford_North_SB_1976_04.jpg   Oxford Station North Signal Box seen here on the 10th April 1976 following closure. The box was originally Oxford Engine Shed and opened around 1915. It contained a 96 lever frame. The box was renamed Oxford Station North when the frame was relocked and renumbered in May 1944. Any further information regarding this box gratefully received.  Day trip to Reading – 10th April 1976 (Part 4)  (2)
45407_0811_Huddersfield.jpg   LMS Stanier Class 5, 4-6-0, 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier storms through Huddersfield station with 1Z31, Manchester Victoria – Huddersfield – Blackburn – Manchester Victoria “Cotton Mill Express”, 22nd November 2008. Originally 5407 it was built by the Armstrong Whitworth Company, Spotswood, Newcastle in 1937 for the London Midland and Scottish Railway. It was one of a batch of two hundred and twenty six engines (which was the largest order ever placed with a private builder by a British Railway Company) worth £2.7 million. When new the engine was delivered to Kettering where it worked for a considerable time on the Midland mainline. In late 1960’s the engine was moved between various sheds ending up at Lockstock Hall in 1968. It was one of the final Black 5's withdrawn when it was condemned on the 4th August 1968. The engine was purchased from BR by David Davis for £3300 and was subsequently moved to Carnforth for restoration. In 1974 it was bought by Paddy Smith who operated the engine on the BR system. In 1989 45407 was moved to Carnforth for new tyres and onto the E.L.R. for running on Heritage Railways for the last three years of its boiler ticket. In 1997 Ian Riley bought the engine and had the engine overhauled at his works in Bury. Work included a new tender tank with greater water capacity, the fitting of air brake equipment to enable the engine to haul modern coaching stock and the fitting of TPWS. to comply with modern safety and signalling requirements.  Steam  (2)
37293_1977_02_Cardiff.jpg   37293 light engine at Cardiff General, 19th February 1977. Built by English Electric as D6993 and released into traffic in July 1965, allocated to Cardiff Canton. I first saw this locomotive stabled on the old steam shed at Raydr on the 11th May 1969 in company with five class 08’s (3595, 3604, 3753, 3807, 4128), six class 37’s (6600/02, 6875, 6970/91/95) and PWM651. Renumbered 37293 in February 1974 it would remain a Cardiff engine for twenty eight years until transferred to Eastleigh in May 1993 and on to Stewarts Lane in March 1994. Transferred back to Eastleigh in September 1997 and finally transferred to Toton in November 1998, until stored in April 1999. 37293 was sent to France for a year in July 1999 and on its return was dumped at Tyne Yard for over eight years. The end came when it was transported by road on the 5th February 2009 to CF Booth, Rotherham who quickly broke it up, having disposed of 37293 by the 11th February 2009.  1970/80's Modern Image - Type 3's  (2)
OX21-OX71_0804_Oxford.jpg   OX21/71 is an interesting signal in that the colour light signals are mounted on a very non typical structure for signals of this type and age. The structure looks more like one you would expect to see supporting semaphore signals. When the area was resignalled with multi-aspect signalling was an existing structure reused? If so it is unusual. Oxford, 4th April 2008.  Infrastructure  (1)
37125_1977_07_Shireoaks.jpg   37125 heads west through Shireoaks with a train of empty 16 ton mineral wagons and 21 ton coal hoppers, 6th July 1977. 37125 was built by English Electric at the Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns works as D6825 and it entered traffic on the 8th May 1963 allocated to Cardiff Canton. Its first transfer was to York in June 1966 after which it was regularly on the transfer list with spells at Gateshead (1966, 1986), Stratford (1968, 1973 and 1985), March (1972, 1979), Tinsley (1975, 1986) Immingham (1979, 1980) Eastfield (1980, 1985), Motherwell (1981, 1985) and Cardiff (1986). In 1986 four class 37s, were converted to test the Mirrlees MB275T engine and Brush alternator for the proposed class 38. 37125 was one of these locomotives and became 37904. It was also fitted with new bogies, and had ballast weights to increase their overall weight to 120 tons. Following conversion it was allocated to Canton and operated as part of the Heavy Metals sector. During the late 1990s use of the Class 37/9s declined due to the problems maintaining such a small number of non-standard locos and 37904 was stored unserviceable in May 1996. Following storage at Cardiff Canton it migrated to Crewe in November 2002 where it would continue to slowly decay until moved to CF Booth Rotherham in October 2004 and broken up in November 2004.   On this day in History - East Anglia – 19th August 1973  (1)
25177_1979_06_Nottingham.jpg   25177 leads 25214 into Nottingham station platform 5 with 1M02, 12:32 Skegness – Leicester service, 30th June 1979. 25177 was originally D7527 and was delivered from Derby works to Toton during January 1965 as part of a large batch of Type 2’s replacing steam on the Midland Main Line. In October 1971 it was one of a four Toton class 25’s (7525 – 7528) transferred to Willesden and it would remain a London area engine (moving over to Cricklewood) until withdrawn. In the first two months of 1979 25177 received its last classified repair (general) at Derby works and surprisingly, as it was vacuum brake only it survived a nine month stay at Derby works from February 1980 receiving collision repairs. 25214 was originally D7564 and was delivered from Derby works to Toton during November 1965. The month of November 1982 proved to be a disastrous month for class 25's with twelve being withdrawn. This included both 25177 and 25214. Following withdrawal 25177 was moved to Stratford for re-railing exercises and during the Stratford Open Day on the 9th July 1983 the local engineers had 25177 on its side in a demostration of how rolling stock is re-railed. 25177 made its final leisurely journey between the 5th - 14th June 1984 as 9Z28, Stratford – Swindon works, accompanied by 08550 and 40092 and was broken up in May 1986. Following withdrawal 25214 visited Stratford, Healey Mills and Doncaster before eventually being dragged south to Swindon works. It would spend almost four years withdrawn prior to being broken up in September 1986.  On this day in History - East Anglia - 2nd September 1969  (1)
25178_1978_08_Nottingham.jpg   25178 leads 25193 on the approach to Nottingham station with 1E85, 09:20 Derby – Skegness, 5th August 1978. 25178 was originally D7528 and was delivered from Derby works to Toton during January 1965 as part of a large batch of Sulzer Type 2’s replacing steam on the Midland Main Line. In October 1971 it was one of a four Toton class 25’s (7525 – 7528) transferred to Willesden and it would remain a London area engine (moving over to Cricklewood) for the next ten years until transferred to Bescot and then Crewe in 1982. It received its last classified repair at Derby works in August 1977 and it was therefore fortunate to survive for almost another eight years until withdrawn in April 1985. Following withdrawal it was initially stored at Kingmoor and finally ended its days at Vic Berry's, Leicester almost four years later during March 1989. 25193 was originally D7543 and was withdrawn in November 1984. Following withdrawal it was dumped at Toton before moving to Swindon late in February 1985. It survived here long enough to join the locomotives that were transferred to Vic Berry's Leicester, and was broken up there during November 1987.  On this day in History - East Anglia - 2nd September 1969  (1)
40145_1977_07_Doncaster.jpg   40145 has just crossed over from the Up Fast to the Up Slow as it ambles south through Doncaster with a mixed class 9 freight, 30th July 1977. Originally D345 it was built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton le Willows, entering service on 17th May 1961. D345 introduced the final variation of nose design for the class which was fitted to the remaining locomotives to be built. This featuring a central four-digit headcode panel (although by this date it has acquired a “domino” screen to the panel) and no gangway doors which gives a much neater appearance. D345 was one of four locomotives (D345 - D348) allocated to Neville Hill for Leeds – Edinburgh duties including the 'Queen of Scots Pullman to replace Pacific steam power. Subsequent transfers saw spells at York (January 1963), Healey Mills (January 1967), Gateshead (October 1969), Healey Mills (February 1976), Gateshead (October 1976), Haymarket (March 1978) and finally Longsight (May 1978). 40145 was one of the last four class 40’s to receive a classified repair at Crewe works and was released to traffic in November 1980. It was withdrawn on 10th June 1983 after sustaining derailment damage in Stourton Yard, Leeds. Following withdrawal 40145 was purchased for preservation and delivered to East Lancashire Railway at Bury in February 1984, the first class 40 to enter preservation. Since entering preservation 40145 has been a consistent and reliable locomotive and in October 2002 was certified for use on Network Rail.  On this day in History - Stoke/Crewe Works– 17th August 1969  (1)
10 47506_1976_04_Reading.jpg   47506 takes the centre road through Reading station as it heads for London Paddington with an Up express, 10th April 1976. Originally D1949 it was built by Brush at Loughborough and entered traffic on the 26th August 1966 allocated to West Coast Main Line duties. In May 1970 it transferred for a spell at Toton before heading in August 1972 to the Western Region initially at Bristol before transferring to Landore in May 1974 where it was allocated at the time of the photograph. In May 1979 it was transferred to Haymarket and equipped with RCH remote control equipment for 100mph push-pull duties between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and renumbered 47707. When these duties were taken over by DMU’s it transferred south to Old Oak Common in April 1990 for Thames Valley suburban duties followed by a transfer to Crewe in March 1993 for parcel sector duties. Withdrawn in May 1996 it would take almost fourteen years to dispose of this locomotive. Following long periods at Crewe Basford Hall and Barrow Hill it was finally dispatched to CF Booth, Rotherham and broken up in February 2010.  Day trip to Reading – 10th April 1976 (Part 2)  (1)
11 47020_1976_04_Reading.jpg   47020 departs from Reading with a train for London Paddington, 10th April 1976. 47020 was delivered in May 1964 from Crewe works as D1583 and allocated to Cardiff Canton MPD. Apart from a short spell allocated to Bescot in 1973/74 it spent the next twenty six years allocated to Western Region MPD’s, being a Plymouth Laira engine at the time of the photograph. Renumbered 47020 in the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme it was fitted with electric train heating in February 1991 when it was renumbered 47556. It was transferred to the London Midland Region, Crewe in February 1990 and was again renumbered in April 1990 to 47844 when fitted with twin fuel tanks. It was withdrawn in May 2002 and broken up in October 2004 by HNRC on site at Crewe works.  Day trip to Reading – 10th April 1976 (Part 3)  (1)
12 47533_1976_04_Reading.jpg   Bescot allocated 47533 approaches Reading with a westbound express, 10th April 1976. Built at Crewe works as D1651 it entered traffic in January 1965 allocated to Cardiff Canton MPD. It transferred two months later to Landore and after eight years transferred to Old Oak Common in May 1973. It left the Western Region and transferred to the London Midland Region (Bescot) in June 1974. It was allocated 47067 under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme, but this was never carried as it was fitted with electric train heating equipment and renumbered 47533 in August 1974. It would remain a Bescot engine for over eleven years until transferred to Crewe in November 1985. In February 1991 47533 was in collision with 47472 at Reading station. . The damage sustained by both locomotives was not as extensive as that incurred by many examples that had been repaired, however both 47472 and 47533 were subsequently withdrawn. 47533 was broken up four years later in February 1995 on site at Old Oak Common.  Day trip to Reading – 10th April 1976 (Part 3)  (1)
13 47090_1976_04_Reading.jpg   47090 Vulcan approaches Reading with a train of bogie oil tanks, 10th April 1976. Originally D1676 it was built at Crewe works and entered traffic allocated to Cardiff Canton MPD in April 1965. It was fitted with electric train heating in November 1984 and renumbered 47623, long range fuel tanks in March 1990 and renumbered 47843 and is still in existence being part of the Rivera Trains fleet.  Day trip to Reading – 10th April 1976 (Part 3)  (1)
14 1071_1976_04_Reading.jpg   1071 Western Renown approaches Reading with a westbound express, 10th April 1976. Western Renown was built at Crewe works and entered traffic in November 1963. Delivered in maroon livery it received its corporate blue in June 1967. I first saw this locomotive at Gloucester on a trip from Nottingham to Bristol for the open day held at Bristol Bath Road MPD on the 18th October 1969. 1071 would survive in traffic for another six months being withdrawn in December 1976 with around 1,232,000 miles on the clock and was broken up at Swindon works almost two years later in November 1978.  Day trip to Reading – 10th April 1976 (Part 3)  (1)
15 310090_1979_09_Birmingham_International.jpg   310090 is working a northbound local service to Birmingham New Street and has called at Lea Hall (between Coventry and Birmingham), 17th September 1979. On the completion of the West Coast Electrification into Euston in 1966 local and suburban services south of Birmingham were in the hands of forty nine, four car electric multiple units of class AM10. These later became class 310 and were built at Derby Carriage works between 1965 and 1967. They were the first EMUs to be based on the Mark II bodyshell, which featured semi-integral construction. They remained in service on West Coast Main Line duties (rarely operating north of Birmingham) until displaced by class 317 EMU’s in 1987. They were then cascaded to the London Tilbury and Southend lines displacing class 302 EMU’s (built in 1958) until again displaced, this time by class 357 EMU’s between 1999 and 2002 and withdrawn.  Birmingham – Coventry – 17th September 1979 (Part 2)  (1)
16 47512_1976_04_Reading.jpg   47512 departs from Reading with a service for London Paddington, 10th April 1976. 47512 was originally D1958 and it was one of the last class 47’s to be built at the Brush Falcon works at Loughborough and was delivered in corporate blue livery. It entered traffic in February 1967, allocated to London Midland Western Lines (LMWL) which was effectively Crewe. The allocation code LMWL was abolished in 1968 and D1959 was “transferred” to the Stoke Division (DO5) which again was effectively Crewe. In April 1973 it transferred to Landore and this was the start of a thirteen year spell as a Western Region engine predominantly allocated to Landore but with the last three years at Old Oak Common. In May 1986 it transferred to Gateshead and a year later in May 1987 it transferred back to Crewe and remained a Crewe engine until withdrawn in October 1991 after a career of twenty four years.  Day trip to Reading – 10th April 1976 (Part 4)  (1)
17 31231_1976_04_Oxford.jpg   31231 pauses at Oxford with a northbound service formed of Mark I coaching stock, 10th Aprol 1976. 31231 was originally D5658 and was built by Brush at the Falcon works, Loughborough entering traffic in October 1960. D5658 is one of a batch of sixteen locomotives (D5655 – D5670) which entered service with the Mirrlees engine up-rated from 1365bhp to 1600bhp following the trial with D5545. This effectively made them a Type 3 locomotive but they were never classified as such. They were allocated to March MPD for accelerated Liverpool Street – Kings Lynn duties. However by 1962 the Mirrlees engine started to develop major problems and the up-rated engines were quickly de-rated to 1250bhp. The final solution adopted was to re-engine all two hundred and sixty two Brush Type 2 locomotives with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine which took place between 1964 and 1969. It spent the first part of its career on the Eastern Region before it was transferred to the Western Region around 1975 as part of the final withdrawal of the diesel hydraulic fleet and remained a Western Region engine until early 1986 when it transferred back to the Eastern Region. After twenty nine years service it was withdrawn in January 1990. Following withdrawal it lingered for fourteen months before being broken up by MC, Metals, Glasgow in March 1991.  Day trip to Reading – 10th April 1976 (Part 4)  (1)
18 47526_1976_03_Grantham.jpg   York allocated 47526 drifts into platform 1 at Grantham with 1A09, 08:50 York – Kings Cross service, Friday, 19th March 1976. 47526 was built at Crewe works as D1109 and entered traffic on the 10th January 1967 allocated to York MPD. For the next twenty years it would allocated to MPD’s (York, Holbeck and Gateshead) which had “top link” East Coast Passenger duties and it could be generally found pounding up and down the East Coast Main Line on express passenger, sleeper and “excursion” traffic. To cope with the introduction of electrically heated air conditioned daytime coaching stock with the retention of steam heated overnight sleeper coaching stock on the East Coast it was one of a number of class 47’s that retained its steam heating boiler (Stone Vapour) when fitted with electric train heating in 1971. Its first transfer away from East Coast duties was in May 1988 when it moved to Plymouth Laira and it would find itself regularly on the transfer list over the next ten years with spells at Bristol, Crewe, Old Oak Common, Tinsley, Stratford and finally Immingham from where it was withdrawn in June 1998.   On this day in History - East Anglia - 2nd September 1969  (1)
19 47426_1976_03_Grantham.jpg   Gateshead allocated 47426 and its train of Mark I coaching stock power around the curve approaching Grantham with a southbound express, 6th March 1976. 47426 was built at Brush Loughborough and delivered new to Darnall as D1534 in August 1963. It was one of a small number of class 47’s that retained its steam heating boiler (Spanner Mark III) when fitted with electric train heating to enable it to continue working the East Coast Main Line overnight services which retained steam heated stock well after the day time stock had become electric heated. It remained an Eastern Region engine for most of its life and apart from a seven month spell from October 1977 allocated to Stratford, it spent time at all the Eastern Region MPD’s supplying traction for East Coast Main Line expresses. It transferred to Crewe in March 1988, Tinsley in July 1990 and finally Old Oak Common in July 1991 from where it was withdrawn in December 1992. Following withdrawal it lingered for over five years before being broken up by MRJ Phillips on site at Old Oak Common MPD in May 1997.  On this day in History - Doncaster – 23rd August 1969  (1)
20 08867_1977_05_Worksop.jpg   08867 heads a row of four class 08’s stabled in the yard at Worksop. 7th May 1977. The class 08 is the standard British Railways shunting engine and from 1953 to 1962, nine hundred and ninety six locomotives were built, making it the most numerous of all British locomotive classes. There were also in the same period twenty six near identical (but higher-geared) class 09 locomotives built, and one hundred and seventy one similar (but fitted with different engines and electrical equipment) locomotives built which together brought the total number of outwardly-similar machines to one thousand one hundred and ninety three. The class 08 design was based on the London Midland and Scottish Railway 12033 series (later class 11) design introduced in 1945. 08867 was originally D4035 and it was built at Darlington in 1961 and allocated to Sheffield Darnall. It transferred to Tinsley when Darnall closed. By 1974 it was a Shirebrook engine (which supplied the Worksop pilots) and in early 1983 it made the long journey to Swindon works for classified repair. When it was outshopped it had been fitted with dual brakes and was reallocated to Thornaby. By 1999 it had migrated to Allerton from where it was withdrawn in November 1999. It was briefly used by AV Dawson, Middlesborough around July 2002 before being stored at Ferrybridge until October 2005 when it was transported to TJ Thompson’s yard at Stockton. There it lingered until June 2007 when it was broken up.  On this day in History – Doncaster Works 10th August 1975  (1)

As my photographic skills improved so did the quality control on what was acceptable for the collection. Those transparencies that failed the quality control were generally consigned to the waste paper bin. However a few survived and with the technology now available a passable image can be made from some of these. I have been experimenting with a further batch of transparencies and this collection contains those that have been from a photographic point of view “reinstated to traffic from the scrap line”. Feedback and comments welcome.

    17th Aug 2010On this day in History - Stoke/Crewe Works– 17th August 1969 (16 images) New
    On this day forty one years ago I paid a visit to Stoke and Crewe. At Stoke locomotives were stabled at Cockshute and on shed were four class 08’s (3291/92, 3798, 3801), eleven class 24’s (5011/20/23/27/33/44/49/63/76/86/92) and one class 25 (5237). Later a tour around Crewe Works produced three class 08’s (3068/95, 3217), one class 11 (12062), four class 20’s (8061/67, 8188, 8303), three class 25’s (7555/61, 7627), thirteen class 40’s (218/39/42/45/73/75/77/81/88, 345/52/64/94), thirty four class 47’s (1501/02/05/06/08/09/10/14/17/28/29/48, 1617/48/77/84/87, 1701/02/12/32/39/44/50/60, 1811/12/58/63/86, 1919/37/60/83), one class 50 (400), three class 73’s (E6012/13/25), one class 74 (E6109), five class 76’s (E26006/16/23/28/48), one class 82 (E3050), one class 84 (E3045), one class 85 (E3077) and four class 86’s (E3111/13/52/93).

Of note is the variety of classes under repair at Crewe works including Southern Region electro-diesels and the Manchester – Sheffield dc electrics which were repaired at Crewe following the closure of Gorton works in the mid 1960’s. Also of note is the large number of the first batch of class 47’s (nine out of twenty). After six years in traffic were they due there first general repair? Finally 12062 would be withdrawn eight months later in April 1970 and was broken up at Derby works in December 1971.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

Class 24 D5085 entered traffic almost four months after D5084 (April) and D5086 (May), I wonder why it was delayed?

The first LMS Patriot 4-6-0, 45502 and non accident related Jubilee 4-6-0, 45609 were withdrawn this month along with the last Midland Railway 0-4-4T, 58086 and the last North London Railway 0-6-0T, 58850, although 58850 would eventually enter preservation and can currently be found at the Bluebell Railway.

Rummaging around the loft I have come across a reprint of the Ian Allen 1948 British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume I bought in the 1970’s. Looking through it I notice that over sixty years later a number of the locomotives listed are still in existence and have in that period been photographed by myself. This next batch of photographs includes three 57xx 0-6-0 Pannier tanks, a King 4-6-0 and a couple of Hall 4-6-0’s. A significant number of my steam photographs lack captions and by grouping them together in this series of collections it will encourage me to write new and update existing captions. Further parts of this collection will follow in due course.

    7th Aug 2010Odds and Sods Re-instatements (Part 2) (3 images)
As my photographic skills improved so did the quality control on what was acceptable for the collection. Those transparencies that failed the quality control were generally consigned to the waste paper bin. However a few survived and with the technology now available a passable image can be made from some of these. I have been experimenting with a further batch of transparencies and this collection contains those that have been from a photographic point of view “reinstated to traffic from the scrap line”. Feedback and comments welcome.

One of our current projects is to replace the current signalling system relay interlocking at Hitchin with a solid state interlocking (SSI). Consequently we have a project site depot in the yard at Hitchin. Adjacent to our site depot is On Track Plant depot that was used by Jarvis Fastline. With the demise of Jarvis Fastline it is being used as a collection point for some of their OTP assets as well as their two class 56 locomotives. During a visit to our site depot I was able to photograph elements of OTP, however the two class 56 locomotives are securely lock away in the two road shed.

The family holiday in 1970 was to Barry Island, South Wales The family holiday was the one time in the year that I would have a day out on the railways with my Dad in tow. He was not the slightest bit interested in railways but always felt that this was the time to take a more direct interest in my hobby and spend a day with his son. The year before it was a day on the Ffestiniog Railway and this year I had already dragged him round the graveyard of steam before we had a day out to Cardiff and this is what we saw that day.

    Cardiff – Barry
    Class 35 (7078), class 47 (1901/04/15/19).

Locomotives of note are the three class 14’s which had all been withdrawn almost two years previously in October 1968 (9509/19) and December 1969 (9535). 9509/19 would not survive much longer as within three months they had been towed to G Cohen’s yard at Kettering and broken up in November 1970. 9535 was sold to the National Coal Board for further use in the North East and would survive until January 1984.

    1st Aug 2010On this day in History - Grantham – 1st August 1973 (13 images)
A mid week summers day (Wednesday) spent sitting on Grantham station watching the trains go by.

    Class 08 (3074), class 25 (5190), class 31 (5698), class 40 (258), class 46 (170/92), class 47 (1101/03/04/06/08/09, 1510/14/25/32/41/42/45, 1620/91, 1778/79, 1869, 1970/88), class 55 (9001/02/04/05/07/08/10/11/12/13/14/16/17/18/19/20/21).

Of note is the fact that at this point in time Grantham still had the requirement for a class 08 pilot engine (3074) outstationed from Lincoln (40A). 3074 still exists as 08060 on the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway. Also in the day I saw seventeen out of twenty two Deltics in service, this representing an availability of at least 77%. Of the five not seen this day 9000/03/09 were in Doncaster works undergoing classified repair (Intermediate/Light/Intermediate respectively), 9006 was making its way from Edinburgh to Doncaster works (which it entered the following day) for an unclassified repair (No.1 power unit change) and 9015 was spare or on exam at Finsbury Park.

Of note is the diversity of 350hp diesel shunters found at Immingham with examples of class 08, 10 and 11 being present, although the days were numbered for the class 10 and 11 locomotives. Locomotives of note were 12125 and 12135 which had been withdrawn the previous month in June 1969 and would be broken up within a few weeks of this visit during September 1969. 3613/14/19 had all been withdrawn in February 1969 and 3618 had been withdrawn in April 1969, all bar 3614 were sold to the National Coal Board for use at Moor Green colliery, the unfortunate 3614 being broken up within days of this visit during August 1969.

    26th Jul 2010On this day in History - Mystery Excursion – 26th July 1970 (8 images)
A popular business venture by British Rail in the late 1960’s and 1970’s was the Mystery Excursion where you bought a ticket for a day out by train without knowing where you were going. In this case through knowing someone in the local control office I actually knew where I was going when I boarded the train at Nottingham station. We left behind two class 25’s (7524, 7649) for a run to Morecambe on the north west coast via Derby, the Hope Valley and Manchester.

    Class 03 (2130, 2386/88), Class 08 (3037, 3246/53/54/83/86/93, 3310/40/71, 3404/05/10, 3571/73/77/80/81/89, 3783, 3845/54, 4030), class 11 (12098), class 17 (8521), class 20 (8136/59), class 24 (5012/90/96/99), class 25 (5156/69/72/73/74/77/81/97, 5227/67/76/81/87, 7518/24/51/70/72, 7608/35/36/49/73/76), class 27 (5359), class 37 (6802/68), class 40 (202/13/49/94, 300), class 45 (13/44/57/96/97, 111/23), class 47 (1508/15, 1633/35, 1850, 1946/56), class 50 (418), class 84 (E3038)

    Locomotives of note are:
3037 which on withdrawal in December 1972 became snowplough ADB966510, which was not a success and was broken up in March 1979, 12098 which would be withdrawn a few months later in February 1971, sold to NCB for further use, entered preservation but was broken up as recently as June 2006, 8521 withdrawn in October 1968 and used by BR Research at Derby as a mobile Generator, broken up in October 1978, E3038 was at the Derby Research Centre at a time when the whole class was stored unserviceable, 5359 what was this Scottish engine doing so far south around Preston, and finally train engine 7524 which would be an early class 25 casualty due to accident damage. On the 5th August 1976 25174 (7524) coupled to 25030 was involved in an accident (being hit by runaway wagons) at Aylesbury. 25174 suffered a crushed cab, however whatever damage 25030 suffered was not as visible. After the collision 25030 and 25174 were initially taken to Cricklewood, where 25030 was withdrawn. On the 9th August 1976 both headed north to Derby Works, 25030 for component recovery and breaking up and 25174 for evaluation. They arrived just in time for the Annual Open Day, with 25174 parked in the Works arrival sidings, a location where its crushed cab was visible to most visitors who toured the Works. The evaluation proved to be the end of 25174 as it was withdrawn in September 1976 and it would lie rotting at Derby until June 1978 before being broken up

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

On the 16th July 1975 the booked locomotive for the 14:25 Birmingham New St – Paddington was failed prior to departure and substituted by 25267/69. They returned with the 17:40 Paddington Birmingham New St service.

    On the 12th July 1975 five Saturday holiday services to Yarmouth produced ten class 25’s: 25122+25131 (1E62, Coventry), 25075+25269 (1E75, Derby), 25127+25252 (1E83, Derby), 25125+25126 (1E91, Walsall) and 25136+25258 (1E76, Leicester).

    24th Jul 20101948 Combined Volume (Part 3) (8 images)
Rummaging around the loft I have come across a reprint of the Ian Allen 1948 British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume I bought in the 1970’s. Looking through it I notice that over sixty years later a number of the locomotives listed are still in existence and have in that period been photographed by myself. This next batch of photographs includes a couple of Hall 4-6-0’s, a Castle 4-6-0, a large “Prairie” 2-6-2T and a 42xx class 2-8-0T. A significant number of my steam photographs lack captions and by grouping them together in this series of collections it will encourage me to write new and update existing captions. Further parts of this collection will follow in due course.

One of the benefits of traversing the A34 on my way back from Basingstoke is the ability to drop into Didcot as you pass by and as the sun was out I decided to do just that. As always feedback and comments welcome.
    20th Jul 2010On this day in History - North Notts – 20th July 1969 (6 images)
The school holidays have just started and forty years ago on the day that man first set foot on the moon it was out with the push bike for the forty mile plus round trip to Shirebrook calling in on the way at the old steam shed at Kirkby in Ashfield which was still being used as a stabling point.
    Kirkby in Ashfield MPD
    Class 20 (8010/12/16/39/40/45/47/48/59/62/68/91, 8111/14/37/44/57/62/67/71/72/74/81/85/91/96), class 45 (66), class 47 (1752, 1807/31)
    Shirebrook MPD
    Class 08 (3325), class 10 (4057/66/69), class 31 (5584, 5684/87, 5806/14/19/23/24/26/30/33/35/44), class 47 (1518/24, 1791, 1801/97/99, 1998), Brush Prototype HS4000.

Of note are 1518, one of the original batch of twenty class 47’s which did not often stray from the ECML passenger duties, what that was doing at Shirebrook, a freight depot I do not know. HS 4000 of course was the Brush Type 5 prototype Kestrel and was at this time on trial with British Rail and a Tinsley engine. It was regularly out-stationed at Shirebrook working coal trains to Whitemoor yard, March. Also at this time Toton was receiving class 20’s transferred from the London area and from Scotland and on this day I saw for the first time 8010/12 ex London and 8111 ex Scotland.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome.

Of note are 1519, one of the original batch of twenty class 47’s which did not often stray from the ECML, the ill fated 7605 which would be destroyed three years later just “down the road” at Lenton South Junction and class 27 5375 which is a reminder that during the 1960’s half the class 27 fleet were Midland Main Line engines. Also at this time Toton was receiving class 20’s transferred from the London area and from Scotland and on this day I saw for the first time 8006/07 ex London and 8114 ex Scotland.

    14th Jul 2010“Grid” Re-instatements – (Part 3) (3 images)
As my photographic skills improved so did the quality control on what was acceptable for the collection. Those transparencies that failed the quality control were generally consigned to the waste paper bin. However a few survived and with the technology now available a passable image can be made from some of these. I have been experimenting with a further batch of transparencies of class 56 locomotives and this collection contains those that have been from a photographic point of view “reinstated to traffic from the scrap line”. Feedback and comments welcome.

So ended day six at Paddington ready for the overnight train to Plymouth.

Locomotives of note: With the decline of traditional traffic through Southampton Docks the first of the class 07 withdrawals had just taken place in May 1973 and 2988/91/93/98 were all condemned. Three of these would be broken up starting with 2988 four months later in November 1973, however 2991 still survives today. 3012/13/14/45/47 were also all condemned with 3012/13 being broken up three months later in October 1973. 3045 survived until April 1976 whilst 3047 was sold and exported to Liberia, 3014 still survives today. Hymek 7016 would survive another year in traffic being condemned in July 1974.

1973 saw the start of the withdrawal of the class 52 western fleet commencing with the three of the four remaining vacuum braked only locomotives with 1019 being condemned in May 1973 and 1018/20 being condemned in June 1973 and the first dual braked locomotive 1032 also being condemned in June 1973 (all four being on the scrap line at Laira when visited during this week in July). B954353 is one of a batch of eight hundred and forty five diagram 1/506, 20 ton vacuum brake fitted Goods Brake Vans, built at Faverdale, Darlington in 1958 to lot number 3129 and is seen here at Ruddington, Great Central Railway (North), 22nd August 2010. Diagram 1/506 was the predominant design of British Railways Goods Brake Van with two thousand eight hundred and fifty five being constructed between 1950 and 1958. The design was very similar to the final design of London and North Eastern Railway Goods Brake Van. Towards the end of there careers a few were fitted with air through pipes for use with air braked trains.

    Technical Data
    Cameras
The photographs on this site were taken with the following cameras
1973 – 20th December 1975: A cheap non SLR Haminex “point and shoot” camera with poor depth of field and poor focus around the edges of the frame.
    21st December 1975 – 5th May 1979: Praktica SLR with 50mm lens and 200mm telephoto. I added a 75-260mm zoom lens in November 1976.
5th May 1979 – 2003: Canon AT1 SLR with 50mm lens plus the 200mm telephoto and 75-260mm zoom lens although I occasionally still used the Praktica if I was at work.
2003 – April 2007: Olympus C150 non SLR “point and shoot” digital camera
April 2007 to date: Canon 400D digital SLR with a 18-55mm zoom and a 90-300mm Canon zoom
January 2008 to date; Kodak Easyshare M753 digital “point and shoot” which I keep in my pocket and tend to use when I am working trackside.

    Scanners
The overwhelming majority of non digital photographs on the site are from 35mm transparencies originals and have been scanned using an Epsom 4490 scanner. A few are from prints and prior to obtaining the Epsom in December 2007 were scanned using a HP PSC 2335 scanner.
