| A weekend tour of the Glasgow and Edinburgh area starts at Motherwell MPD. Motherwell MPD in 1976 whilst now home to diesels still had the feel of a steam shed as it utilised the original Caledonian Railway eight road straight steam shed and as can be seen in the photographs the depot was mucky and grimy underfoot.

40019 is stabled outside of the shed at Motherwell, 27th March 1976. Although now a diesel depot Motherwell MPD still had the feel of a steam shed in 1976 as it utilised the original Caledonian Railway eight road straight steam shed and as can be seen for a diesel depot is very mucky and grimy underfoot. Originally D219 it was built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire in 1959 and allocated to Camden MPD. It would remain a London Midland Region engine through out its career. Twenty five class 40’s carried the names of famous ocean going liners on cast brass plates and D219 was named Caronia, with the nameplates being fitted during works overhaul in 1963. These nameplates began to be removed by BR during the 1970, as the class 40’s were no longer considered as front line passenger engines and they were also attracting unwanted interest from "collectors". 40019 received its last classified repair at Crewe works in February 1979 and was released still vacuum brake only. Not being dual braked would mean that its survival would be relatively short and it was withdrawn in December 1981. 37237 is stabled outside of the shed at Motherwell, 27th March 1976. Although now a diesel depot Motherwell MPD still had the feel of a steam shed in 1976 as it utilised the original Caledonian Railway eight road straight steam shed and as can be seen for a diesel depot is very mucky and grimy underfoot. 37237 was originally D6937 and was built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton Le Willows. It entered traffic in May 1964, allocated to Cardiff Canton MPD. It transferred to Scotland (Eastfield) in March 1968 and would remain a Scottish engine for the next seventeen years until transferred back to South Wales (Landore) in March 1985. 37237 entered Crewe Works for refurbishment in the summer of 1987 and emerged as 37893 in October 1987, allocated to Stratford. 37893 transferred to Immingham in April 1990 and this was followed by a period of frequent transfers between Immingham, Thornaby, Motherwell, Toton and finally Crewe. In July 2001 it departed for Italy for a twenty month spell on infrastructure duties, arriving back in the UK in March 2003. Occasionally used since on its return it was finally withdrawn in January 2005. Following withdrawal 37893 was dumped at Bescot until the 21st December 2009 when it was removed by road on and has been taken to Allely's Yard at Studley, where it can currently (January 2010) be found apparently secured for preservation. 1402x2104 37237_1976_03_Motherwell.jpg Buy Print |
20095 and 20094 are stabled outside of the original Caledonian Railway eight road straight steam shed at Motherwell, 27th March 1976. This section of the shed was being used for freightliner wagon repairs at this time. 20095 was originally D8095 and was built by English Electric at the Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn works, Darlington. It entered traffic in October1961, allocated to Eastfield for Scottish lowlands, particularly in the Forth-Clyde area, and Fife coalfield duties. It remained in Scotland until transferred to Tinsley in the early 1980’s. In 1997 it was sold to DRS who refurbished and renumbered it 20305. Recently it has spent periods in store with its latest period commencing in November 2009. 20094 was originally D8094 and was built by English Electric at the Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn works, Darlington. It also entered traffic in October1961, allocated to Eastfield. It was withdrawn in July 1992 from Thornaby . The early morning sun highlights the brake dust and grime covering 20080 stabled on Motherwell MPD, 27th March 1976. 20080 was originally D8080 and was built by English Electric at the Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn works, Darlington. It entered traffic in August 1961, allocated to Eastfield for Scottish lowlands, particularly in the Forth-Clyde area, and Fife coalfield duties. In 1982 20080 was stored when a large number of the vacuum braked class 20 fleet were stored due to the reduction in coal traffic from pit closures and the continued introduction of air braked MGR coal wagons. 20080 was re-instated in 1983 following a General classified repair and fitment of air brake and slow speed control equipment to enable it to operate MGR coal duties. On release it was transferred to Toton. However this “reprieve” proved to be relatively short lived because despite the investment 20080 was withdrawn six years later in July 1990.
