| A weekend tour of the Glasgow and Edinburgh area moves on from Motherwell MPD to the main MPD for Glasgow, Eastfield for a walk round between the rain showers. Eastfield MPD was originally built by the North British Railway in 1904 as a 14 road straight shed. On closure to steam in November 1966 the shed was demolished and a purpose designed diesel depot constructed on the same site. In 1992, the diesel depot was closed and was demolished in 1995. As always feedback and comments welcome.

On a rainy 27th March 1976 Haymarket allocated 40160 is stabled outside Eastfield MPD. 40160 was built by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry works as D360 and entered service in September 1961, allocated to Haymarket MPD. It has the final variation of nose design featuring a central four-digit headcode panel and no gangway doors, giving a much neater appearance. It was one of a batch of class 40’s (D358-D368) which would always be associated with Haymarket MPD, being used on passenger, parcels and express freight duties from Edinburgh to Newcastle, Carlisle, Inverness and Aberdeen. Eventually displaced in Scotland it transferred to the north west for freight and summer secondary passenger duties circa 1981 and after a total career of just over twenty three years (and nearly six years after its last classified repair at Crewe works in January 1979) it was withdrawn on the 26th November 1984 with power unit defects. It would survive for over another two years until broken up at Crewe works in February 1987. 2399x1599 40160_1976_03_Eastfield.jpg Buy Print |
27104 is stabled outside Eastfield MPD, 27th March 1976. 27104 was originally D5387 and is one of sixty nine class 27 locomotives built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company (BRCW) during 1961 and 1962. D5387 was delivered in 1962 and was one of a batch of thirty five class 27’s delivered for Midland Main Line duties. In 1969 it was transferred to Eastfield initially as part of the plan to allowe the withdrawal of the poorly performing Clayton class 17 locomotives from traffic. However in late 1970 it returned south, entering Derby works to be modified for Glasgow-Edinburgh push/pull duties. By the late 1960s, the class 126 DMU’s operating the Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street service were becoming unreliable and they were replaced in 1971 rakes of six Mark IIa carriages powered by two class 27 locomotives fitted with push-pull equipment. Twelve class 27 locomotives were fitted with push – pull equipment and dual brakes (class 27/1) and a further twelve were push – pull equipment, dual brakes and an electric train heating capability via an auxiliary engine/alternator set (class 27?2).. The very intensive 90 mph service was demanding on the class 27 locomotives and reliability was an issue never fully resolved. Eventually in 1980 the Glasgow-Edinburgh push/pull duties were taken over by class 47/7 locomotives and the push – pull was removed from 27104 and it was renumbered to 27048. It was withdrawn in May 1986 and sent to Vic Berry Leicester for breaking up, which was completed in September 1987. 2398x1599 27104_1976_03_Eastfield.jpg Buy Print |
27041 is stabled outside Eastfield MPD, 27th March 1976. 27041 was originally D5405 and is one of sixty nine class 27 locomotives built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company (BRCW) during 1961 and 1962. D5409 was delivered in 1962, allocated to Cricklewood and was one of a batch of thirty five class 27’s delivered for Midland Main Line duties. In 1969 it was transferred to Eastfield, as part of the plan to allowe the withdrawal of the poorly performing Clayton class 17 locomotives from traffic and would remain a Scottish engine until withdrawn. After twenty four years service 27041 was withdrawn in May 1986 and sent to Vic Berry Leicester for breaking up, which was completed in April 1989. 2293x1528 27041_1976_03_Eastfield.jpg Buy Print |
20126 stabled outside Eastfield MPD, 27th March 1976. 20126 was the penultimate engine of the initial batches of class 20 locomotives and entered traffic as D8126 in the summer of 1962, allocated to Polmadie MPD (Glasgow). It was a Scottish based locomotive for a long time (as denoted by the cab recess for single line token exchange equipment) until it moved south to South Yorkshire/Humberside at the end of its career in the late 1980’s. It was withdrawn from Immingham in September 1989 and broken up by MC Metals, Glasgow in March 1992. 2399x1599 20126_1976_03_Eastfield.jpg Buy Print |
