| A trip over to Grantham (I suspect to visit my mate Phil) produced the following.
Class 08 (3037/56, 3363, 3402), class 20 (8077), class 25 (7509/57), class 31 (5674/75, 5812/52), class 45 (38/68/69/98, 113), class 47 (1500/04, 1698, 1811/59). At this time 5674 and 5675 where part of a batch of five class 31’s (5671 – 5675, 31243 – 31247) fitted in 1965 with tablet catchers mounted within cab recesses to aid single line working on the High Dyke – Stainby iron ore branch (south of Grantham) and could usually be found in the 1960’s and early 1970’s out-stationed at Grantham. A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome |
45128 stands in platform 3 at Leicester with what appears to be a northbound express, however as platform 3 is usually used for southbound services I suspect this is a semi-fast from St Pancras terminating at Leicester, 29th February 1976. This photograph shows the poor protection from the elements afforded to would be passengers on platforms 2 and 3 following removal of the overall roof in the early 1970’s and rebuilding the station in around 1980. Originally D113 it was built at Crewe in 1961 and would be withdrawn after twenty seven years service on the 1st August 1988 having been stopped with brake faults and repairs not being approved. It received a very temporary reprieve on the 20th February 1989 when it was reinstated to replace fire damaged celebrity 45106. It was moved from Tinsley to Doncaster depot in March 1989 for wheel turning and returned to Tinsley for load testing. This proved unsuccessful and the plan was dropped at which point it was returned to withdrawn status on the 22nd April 1989. At the beginning of 1992 it was towed to MC Metals, Glasgow and broken up in March 1992. 2399x1599 45128_1976_02_Leicester.jpg Buy Print |
45032 approaches Darlington station with a southbound express made up of predominately Mark IIabc coaching stock, 13th February 1976. 45032 was built at Derby in 1961 as D38 and was initially allocated to Bristol Bath Road for North East – South West cross country duties. 1980 would prove to be a bad year for the class 45 fleet as that was the year that withdrawals commenced in earnest and 45032 was one of four class 45 locomotives withdrawn that December. It was broken up at Swindon works in September 1983. 1906x1271 45032_1976_02_Darlington.jpg Buy Print |
