Single class 20 locomotives were not that common even light engine and therefore 20132 heading south around the back of Doncaster station on the 18th October 1975 is quite noteworthy. 20132 was delivered from English Electric’s Vulcan Foundry works in 1966 as D8132 and was outshopped in green livery. The soundness of the design is shown by the high number of class 20’s still running in the mid 1970’s in there original green paint. As can be seen here 20132 is one of these class 20’s, which denotes that since delivery almost ten years before hand it has not received a classified works repair. 20132 would survive a period in store in 1983 and would continue in traffic into the mid 1990’s Following withdrawal it was sold to Harry Needle in 1999 and was initially stored at Bescot until moved to MOD Longtown in January 2001. In January 2005 it was transported by road to Barrow Hill were it has been repaired and returned to operation and is where it can be currently (December 2008) found.

Unusually operating on it’s own 20128 passes by light engine at Falkand yard, Ayr, 30th August 1978. Although it may appear to have been originally D8128 it was originally D8050 and was built in 1961. The two hundred and twenty eight class 20’s were basically split into three design groups by minor detail differences. The first fifty locomotives (design codes 20-0AV and 20-0BX) were fitted with EE type 526/5D traction motors and headcode discs. The next seventy eight locomotives (design codes 20-0CV and 20-0DX) were fitted with EE type 526/8D traction motors and headcode discs, The final hundred locomotives (design codes 20-0EV and 20-0FX) were fitted with EE type 526/8D traction motors and four character headcode boxes. In order to fit the first of the class (D8000) within the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme in a logical position in respect to its design code it took the number 20050. D8050 then took the number 20128 and D8128 became 20228. On entering traffic in 1961 D8050 was allocated to Darnall MPD in Sheffield, from where it regularly worked into Lincolnshire and Humberside and by 1973 it was one of a batch of six allocated to Immingham. From my available records it was from 1974 – 1985 a Tinsley engine, however they are not complete and any conformation on its allocation in August 1978 would be welcome. In 1997 it was sold to DRS who refurbished and renumbered it 20307. It was stored by DRS in December 2008 and is currently (February 2009) in store at Crewe Gresty Bridge.Previous | NextA strange duty for 20175 as it is seen here at Derby working singularly with a train of Mark I coaching stock on a frosty 24th March 1979. Built in 1966 it would survive until July 1991 when it was withdrawn. Following withdrawal it was sold to RFS for Channel Tunnel construction duties and was numbered RFS2007. Following the completion of the Channel Tunnel it was purchased by DRS for spares and was steadily stripped at Carlisle until the shell was broken up by Harry Needle on site in December 2003.
