A pair of class 20’s with 20209 leading power a class 9 unfitted train of empty coal wagons north through Duffield, 1st June 1979. 20209 was originally D8309, built in 1967 and first allocated to York MPD. By 1973 it had transferred to Tinsley where it would remain until the mid 1980’s when it transferred to Toton. Following a brief spell at Bescot it was withdrawn from Toton in February 1989. Following withdrawal it was sold to Hunslet-Barclay and was to become 20907. However it was not overhauled, instead becoming a source of spares for the six class 20’s that became 20901 to 20906. What was left was then “sold” to DRS who stripped it further with the remains being broken up by Michael Douglas Ltd, Carlisle in December 2001.

The sun is just starting to disperse the early morning mist as 20127 and 20025 crawl out of the haze as they head along the Goods line “round the back” of Wakefield Kirkgate station with a train of 16 ton mineral wagons, 29th January 1976. 20127 was the last of the initial run of class 20 locomotives and entered traffic as D8127 in August 1962 allocated to Polmadie MPD (Glasgow). It was a Scottish based locomotive for a long time (as denoted by the cab recess for single line token exchange equipment) until it moved south to Tinsley in the mid 1970’s. In 1982 20127 was stored when a large number of the vacuum braked class 20 fleet were stored due to the reduction in coal traffic from pit closures and the continued introduction of air braked MGR coal wagons. 20127 was re-instated in December 1982 following air brake fitment to enable it to operate MGR coal duties and transferred to Eastfield. Withdrawn during the early 1990’s it found a new lease of life with Direct Rail Services and was one of the five heavily refurbished class twenties with which DRS commenced operations in 1995. It is numbered 20303 in the DRS fleet and is currently (May 2009) still operational approaching it’s forty seventh birthday. 20025 entered service as D8025 in 1959. It would survive in traffic until withdrawn in September 1991 and was broken up by MC Metals at Glasgow in February 1995.Previous | NextA strange duty for 20201 as it is seen here at Stirling working singularly with a train of HAA coal hoppers and an air braked 20t brake van on the 31st August 1978. 20201 was originally D8301, built in 1967 and first allocated to York MPD. By 1973 it had transferred to Tinsley and by 1978 was a Haymarket engine. It would remain a Scottish engine until a transfer south to Toton sometime in 1987. This transfer would prove to be fatal for 20201 as it was withdrawn in August 1988. It was broken up by Vic Berry, Leicester in March 1990.

From Ged Flannery at 2009-02-28 12:30:05 : The high Summer of 79,and some rather nice looking Country-side when looking straight over the Roofs of the Buildings in the Photograph.I would imagine that this was a very busy spot for Photographing the passing Trains,Duffield is on the Midland main line I think.I have seen plenty of aged shots of snub Nosed Peaks running through this location during their run from St Pancras to Sheffield/Nottingham ETC.
From Graham Harris at 2009-03-03 01:59:40 : An excellant view of Duffield's old wood yard (now a housing estate) which is particularly useful for Mickleover Model Railway Club's layout of Duffield. The train is a class 8 working (class 9 was empty coaching stock) and is probably from Willington CEGB to Seymour Junction (near Barrow Hill).
