Swedish Railways S class 2-6-2T 1178 awaits departure from Wansford, 21st April 1979. Built in 1914 by Motala Verkstad, Sweden it was withdrawn in 1959 and instead of being broken up it was put into the Swedish strategic reserve. It arrived in the UK for preservation in 1975 and in June 1977 it worked the Nene Valley Railway's opening train. Being an ideal size for the line, economical, and easy to operate, 1178 was used frequently, however by 1985 it was stopped with leaking boiler tubes. Due to a motive power crisis, it was returned to traffic in 1989, after a very light overhaul. By 1992 the engine was in poor condition and was withdrawn. It has not run since.

From Peter Skuce at 2009-05-22 00:05:57 : Swedish State Railways 2-6-2T Class S No. 1178 is currently undergoing a heavy general overhaul, in the new overhaul shed, alongside Danish State Railways 0-6-0T Class F No. 656 'Tinkerbell'. Interestingly 1178 was the first European steam loco to be dual braked. The French NORD 4-6-0 Class 3500 No. 3.628 has been transported to France for overhaul there and to run in time to celebrate her centenary. This engine was painted brown and ran between 1977 - 1988. It double headed the first train with No. 1178. Swedish State Railways 4-6-0 Class B No. 101A arrived at the line in 1979 and ran until 1986, when it was withdrawn for overhaul. During this period, it was painted black. She was returned to service Christmas 1995 and has ran until January 2005. In this period she was also dual braked and painted in a blue livery.
