Class 03 0-6-0 diesel mechanical shunter D2199 stands in the yard at Rowsley, Peak Rail, 7th September 2009. D2199 was built at Swindon works in 1961 and was built for light duties where a larger locomotive was not needed or was not allowed, especially for shunting at locomotive and carriage depots, docks and as station pilots. D2199 would be associated with dock duties being allocated through out its British Railways career to MPD’s adjacent to ports, initially Liverpool (Speake Junction MPD), transferring to Birkenhead MPD on its closure in 1966 and finally transferring to Barrow in Furness MPD. The steady reduction during the 1960’s in the demand for small shunting locomotives and the decline in traditional dock traffic meant that these duties progressively disappeared and class 03 withdrawals commenced from 1968 onwards. D2199 was withdrawn from Barrow in June 1972 prior to the 1973 TOPS re-numbering scheme, however it was eventually sold to the National Coal Board in 1974 following an overhaul and air brake fitment at Doncaster works. It then worked at Rockingham, North Gawber and Royston collieries until being placed into store at Monkton in 1984. It was sold in 1987 to the Heritage Shunter Trust and was on loan to Hanson Aggregates, Machen Quarry near Newport from 2003 until it arrived at Peak Rail in May 2006.

Class 05 0-6-0 diesel mechanical shunter D2587 stands in the yard at Rowsley, Peak Rail, 7th September 2009. D2587 is one of a class of sixty nine 0-6-0 diesel mechanical shunters built by the Hunslet Engine Company between 1955 and 1961 and numbered from D2550 – D2619. Built in 1959 it was initially allocated to Wakefield MPD and by 1965 it had migrated to West Hartlepool MPD and by 1967 to Aberdean Ferryhill MPD. The steady reduction during the 1960’s in the demand for small shunting locomotives meant that there was a surplus and the class 05 locomotives did not find favour with British Railways in comparison to the class 04 and 03 locomotives. Class 05 withdrawals commenced as early as October 1966 and with one exception (on the Isle of White) were complete as early as June 1968 (before the end of steam). D2587 was withdrawn from Thornton Junction MPD in July 1967 and after being rebuilt by Hunslet was sold to Chadderton Power Station in Manchester where it worked for many years until sold for preservation to the Heritage Shunter Trust and was initially preserved at the East Lancashire Railway. It then moved to the South Yorkshire Railway at Meadowhall and later spent a number of years on the Lavender Line until 2004 when it arrived at Peak Rail. Previous | NextA new arrival on the Great Central Railway seen here in the yard at Quorn is class 03, D2158. It was built at Swindon in 1960 and being a dual braked example this would prolong its BR career until July 1987 when it was withdrawn from Norwch MPD. After a period dumped at March it was acquired for preservation and by 1997 was at Peak Rail. It moved from Rowsley to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway site at Wirksworth in September 2004. It arrived on the Great Central Railway four days previously on the 12th August 2009.
