25177 leads 25214 into Nottingham station platform 5 with 1M02, 12:32 Skegness – Leicester service, 30th June 1979. 25177 was originally D7527 and was delivered from Derby works to Toton during January 1965 as part of a large batch of Type 2’s replacing steam on the Midland Main Line. In October 1971 it was one of a four Toton class 25’s (7525 – 7528) transferred to Willesden and it would remain a London area engine (moving over to Cricklewood) until withdrawn. In the first two months of 1979 25177 received its last classified repair (general) at Derby works and surprisingly, as it was vacuum brake only it survived a nine month stay at Derby works from February 1980 receiving collision repairs. 25214 was originally D7564 and was delivered from Derby works to Toton during November 1965. The month of November 1982 proved to be a disastrous month for class 25's with twelve being withdrawn. This included both 25177 and 25214. Following withdrawal 25177 was moved to Stratford for re-railing exercises and during the Stratford Open Day on the 9th July 1983 the local engineers had 25177 on its side in a demostration of how rolling stock is re-railed. 25177 made its final leisurely journey between the 5th - 14th June 1984 as 9Z28, Stratford – Swindon works, accompanied by 08550 and 40092 and was broken up in May 1986. Following withdrawal 25214 visited Stratford, Healey Mills and Doncaster before eventually being dragged south to Swindon works. It would spend almost four years withdrawn prior to being broken up in September 1986.

25096 sits in the bay platform at Nottingham, 5th February 1977. Built as D5246 in 1964 it has the dubious honor of being the first non accident damaged class 25/2 to be withdrawn when it was condemned ten months later in December 1977, being denied a classified repair. The withdrawal of 25096 would indicate that by the end of 1977 any class 25 would be a candidate for withdrawal. For most of its career it was a local engine and I have it recorded on Toton MPD on the 22nd March 1970 in company with eleven class 08’s, thirty class 20’s, two class 24’s (5015/49), twelve class 25’s, eight class 44’s, twelve class 45’s, one class 46 and ten class 47’s, making a grand total of eighty seven locomotives.Previous | Next25178 leads 25193 on the approach to Nottingham station with 1E85, 09:20 Derby – Skegness, 5th August 1978. 25178 was originally D7528 and was delivered from Derby works to Toton during January 1965 as part of a large batch of Sulzer Type 2’s replacing steam on the Midland Main Line. In October 1971 it was one of a four Toton class 25’s (7525 – 7528) transferred to Willesden and it would remain a London area engine (moving over to Cricklewood) for the next ten years until transferred to Bescot and then Crewe in 1982. It received its last classified repair at Derby works in August 1977 and it was therefore fortunate to survive for almost another eight years until withdrawn in April 1985. Following withdrawal it was initially stored at Kingmoor and finally ended its days at Vic Berry's, Leicester almost four years later during March 1989. 25193 was originally D7543 and was withdrawn in November 1984. Following withdrawal it was dumped at Toton before moving to Swindon late in February 1985. It survived here long enough to join the locomotives that were transferred to Vic Berry's Leicester, and was broken up there during November 1987.
