25153 has just got the road to the carriage sidings from Nottingham station, 5th July 1979. 25153 was originally D7503 and was delivered from Derby works in October 1964 to the Nottingham Division (Toton). The high level decision to withdraw the Western Region diesel hydraulic fleet required their replacement by a variety of other locomotive classes and in August 1971 5179 arrived at Laira for crew training to enable class 25 locomotives to replace the NBL Class 22 locomotives. Over the next few months class 25 locomotives started to be transferred to Laira and in January 1972 a batch of eight (7502-7509) arrived from the London Midland Region. It would not remain at Laira long and by October 1972 it had transferred to Cardiff Canton and became a Bristol engine during 1974. As can be seen by the bodyside numbers 25153 received its last classified repair and repaint at Glasgow works (although this repair did not include dual brake equipment and it remained vacuum brake only) By the 1980’s 25153 was back on the London Midland Region and was withdrawn in April 1983. After storage at Cricklewood 25153 moved to Swindon works and was broken up in February 1987.

56046 waits for the road east from Nottingham station light engine, 5th July 1979. 56046 is a year old at this point in time having been built at Doncaster works in July 1978. The class 56 fleet eventually totalled one hundred and thirty five locomotives built over seven years (1976 – 1983). When introduced, the class displaced class 47s on MGR coal trains in the East Midlands and Yorkshire coalfields, along with heavy steel and iron ore duties originating in South Wales, Humberside and the North East of England and allowed the withdrawal of older locomotives of classes 25, 40, 45/0 and 46. Delivery of the class 60 locomotives in the late 1980’s in turn displaced the class 56 locomotives from a lot of these duties and made them available for other general freight work, again allowing withdrawal of older locomotives, this time from classes 20, 31 and 47. The class 56 fleet was hit very badly by the introduction of the class 66 locomotives from 1999 and by the end of 2003 the fleet was down to around twenty five in service. 56046 succumbed in June 2002 when it was withdrawn and was initially dumped at Immingham. It was towed to Toton in July 2004 and is currently (February 2010) dumped in the training compound at Toton awaiting its fate Previous | Index
